Is this a good deal?

this is my first bike buildup.... saying that i am letting you all know that i probably cant tell cheap components from expensive components.... i have a trek 1400 frame, with all the parts except wheels tires and tubes... is this a good deal?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Track-Fixed-Gear...3A1%7C294%3A50
please keep in mind that i dont want to spend alot of money on a wheelset yet until i find out if i like the bike or not... this would just be to get it rolling...
thanks for your opinion

I would get on Craigslist and see about picking up a used set of Velocity Deep V's. You can probably get them for around $150-$200. They're solid wheels and not too expensive. A new set will run you around $250. If you have crappy wheels, it's just going to make you dislike riding it that much more. You can always resell the Deep V's if you don't like them. I guarantee they will sell quickly.

+1, you'd be in around a buck 30 on those wheels, get a nice new/used set of flip flops on C-List for about the same, doesn't have to be deep "V"s either, I find them to be a bit on the heavy side, but they are good for resale :thumb:

They aren't fancy but there is nothing wrong with them for the price...

Here are some pics of the wheels on the mixte conversion I built for Mrs. HandsomeRyan.

Based on your PM it sounds like you picked up a set of these. What do you think of them? Have you gotten them installed yet?

Lou627 02-12-09 04:12 PM

I have these, they need to be trued when you get them (at least my front wheel did). There not bad, Ive had no problems. When I got them, I wanted something cheap to get into riding fixed. In hindsight, I wish I had just forked over the 50-100 for a better set.

Good parts aren't cheap.
Cheap parts aren't good.

Including shipping, those wheels come out to just under $130. For not much more (including shipping), you could get these:

solid, not heavy, & cheap.
best of all BFSSFG approved many times over!

^^ THAT is a good deal on a quality wheelset. It's not hipsterific with deep Vs or fruity colors, but no doubt will serve you well.

Why? Even you admit...

It's cool to hate on stuff because it's inexpensive but of all the posts dissing these wheels no one has come up with any complaints of substance explaining WHY these wheels are so bad.

No, they aren't as nice as some more expensive wheels but for cheapos to find out if you like riding a fixed gear or not they aren't bad.

yahnming 02-12-09 07:12 PM

that's a bad deal. put a few hundred miles on those hubs and i bet those bearings **** out.

Lou627 02-13-09 03:39 PM

Yeah man, they feel cheap. And what did I think when I bought them, im going to try it out and not like it and put the bike away forever? It was a bad move. Now im stuck with them because im not going to fork over more cash for another wheelset. Does the po want to but them off me? Im in NYC
