Best Tire Width
I'm looking at buying a pair of Continental Gatorskins for the velocity deep v's I just purchased. The rim width is 19mm and the BSD on the rims is 622. I was wondering what people thought about the tire width? I was thinking either 23mm or 25mm but I've read that I might have problems with the tires being to narrow for the rims and getting pinch flats or rim damage? What width should I go with? 28mm?

any ideas?
How about telling us what kinds of surfaces you ride on and what kind of load the tires will have to carry? Also if you ride aggressively a tire could come off of the rim if it does not fit.
I ride around the city, hence the gatorskins, my friend has a pair and the ride smooth and he's never had a flat with them in almost 6 months. I ride fairly agressively, but don't won't to worry about getting flats or loosing a tire. What is the down side to having a bigger tire? extra friction slower roll?

hey ken what you think?
deep v's handle both 23 and 25mm tires just fine. 23s will be a little more efficient and 25s will be a little more shock absorbent. but the differences will be small.
23s will be fine on Velocity Deep Vs, they won't be too narrow.
thanks man goin with the 25's founr um for 29.99 great price for gatorskins if anyone is need of durable road tires at http://www.modernbike.com/itemgroup....175604&TID=393

I prefer 28's, they will fit on just about any rim that will take a 25, and provide a much nicer ride. If you venture off pavement, a 25 just doesn't cut it. 28s are still rough, but a lot more manageable.
don't venture off pavement that much riding in richmond but do ride on cobblestone streets sometimes. I have had a problem on my current bike with high tire pressure being a fairly rough ride on cobblestone areas of town and lower tire pressure being comfortable on the cobblestones but slow all around.
my 23c's are a bit rough on cobblestones.
if you're riding on cobblestones, get wider tires and lower the pressure on them. it'll smooth it out. although, I can't imagine anyone would be riding on cobblestones all the time.
Just an FYI, continental tires seem to run narrower than the stated width. I have some 32 mm gatorskin tires that are actually more like 28. And my continental ultra 28 are more like 25 in actuality.
I recall reading somewhere that the rolling resistance on 25c clinchers is actually about the same or even less than 23c tires.
I've had up to 32s on my deep Vs, rode smooth at low pressure and lasted longer than I could skid through them.
Why the hell are you riding down the alleyways? There's always broken glass, nails, and just general **** there.
I used to get pinch flats all the time from the cobble stones, especially the one long alley that goes from Laurel to Monument. Now I avoid riding it at all cost. |
why the hell would a ride in an alleyway? I live on grace wich turns into cobblestones along with most of the northern part of the fan after you cross allen st. Also how to you take an alleyway from laurel to monument they are perpendicular? if you turned off laurel into an alleyway you would never hit monument
For my next set of tires I plan on trying 25mm tires.
I notice that 25's hardly weigh any more than 23's, and I think the 25's will handle my weight better and tolerate road debris a little better. |
i have 23 continental gators on my deep v and they are fine....but bumpy on cobbles or bad roads but fine 99 percent of the time
