Look at me I run the blog FiXiE PiXiE! I have the most incredibly annoying website name to show off ugly street bikes and sneakers. Everyone tells me to put a gun against my head and pull the trigger, but they're just hatin'.
Time to put on my dunks and ride around 2 miles!

I rode a fixed gear for the first time in over a year yesterday to watch a crit race here in Gainesville. I got so many snide comments from the roadies. Then riding home after the races ended some random kid walking on the sidewalk yelled "Fixed gear fury!" at me. I forgot how much **** you get for riding a fashion bike, haha.

I've been building one up for about 4 months now...Fork issues...Anyways, I wanted something where I wouldn't keep pedaling down hills because this always puts me 1/2 mile a head of my wife, who coasts all the way down. Coaster brakes are cool, the hub's only like 15 bucks (sturmey archer). Why does everyone care what everyone else is doing? I also did it because it's my dad's first bike from the 60s and it just felt right to leave it as a coaster (even though the coaster is totally new). Talk about some easy whip skids baby, I remember being 12 all over again . At least it has a brake unlike the coasties

Coaster brakes are 100% awesome, it's like being a little kid making tire marks in the driveway until your parents notice what you're doing. Again.

Or what about the pedestrian brake? You know, hit one and stop?

You'll notice back in the old days, coaster brakes were very popular on bicycles that weren't very fast. That's not just coincidence. If you're riding around at 12-15 mph, you're in pretty good shape. If you're going a lot faster, or dodging through traffic, or going down long hills, you might consider upgrading.

the bad assedness of breaking mechanisms goes in this order:
ted shredding > coaster braking > disc > disk > caliper > seatpost mounted caliper > turning your handlebars 90 degrees really quick resulting in a skid > actual skidding
ted shredding > coaster braking > disc > disk > caliper > seatpost mounted caliper > turning your handlebars 90 degrees really quick resulting in a skid > actual skidding

Another way to stop that would be cooler than Ted Shredding would finding an incline to go up and coasting until you lose momentum, or perhaps just running into something.
Coaster brakes are making a comeback, though, because they allow a person to get the brakeless fixed-gear look without the constant pedalling or needing to learn how to skid. Highly convenient, safer, and still good-looking.
