clipless pedals

Are clipless pedals a good idea on a fixed gear bike?

It depends on what you use the bike for...

Except for my errand FG all my other FG bikes run clipless pedals.

the only reason I'm not using clipless(besides me being poor and can't afford it right now) is i ride my bike to class and work and clips/straps is more practical for around town errands.

Try it and see if it's practical for you or not. Sometimes you need to spend the money and experiment to find out for yourself.

I rode geared bikes for years with clips and straps.

Now that I have realized how much clipless riding improves one's spin, I can't imagine riding a fixed gear with clips and straps unless some other factor outweighed the spin improvement.

For example, I've never worked as messenger, but I can imagine how more conventional shoes with clips and straps would help with the job, especially getting around on non-carpeted public-space flooring.

Put a front brake on a fixed gear bike, and I could see platform pedals, or a toe-clip and no-strap type of arrangement for a village or campus bike.

Otherwise, I have found that I can live all day in mountain bike shoes or bike sandals with cleats if I get the right shoes or sandals; and at worst, they "click" on hard floors.

I use eggbeaters on my fixed gear and I wouldn't trade them for anything. The only problem is that you are forced to change shoes occasionally. Small price to pay if you ask me.

I've actually worked multiple 8 hour days in my cycling shoes. Most of the time nobody notices them whenever that happens.

if you are new to riding clipless, i would suggest the cleat style clipless pedals, they are easier to get in/out of.

Another positive with going clipless: It's easier to say no to people wanting to borrow your bike.

99% of the people I know or ride with don't ride fixed gear so I don't have to worry about that....

I prefer eggbeaters, nicer feeling clipping in/out and easy to get into in times of need.

I ran dual sided platform/SPD pedals before the eggbeaters, and while I liked them, I found the mechanism very clunky in comparison (could also be deemed as rugged though, it's a very solid positive feeling of clipping in).

I've done all kinds of riding on them both, upto century rides and down to store runs around the block, etc. and I don't have anything bad to say about either (no hot spots, no weird lack of platform issues, etc.) - I use mostly one pair of shoes and they seem to have a decent sole on them which works out very nicely, and the cleat is recessed on my every-day shoes (Cannondale Roam).

There's no real technical or bike reason why I like eggbeaters more, I just do - first on the road bike, now on my FG as well - I intend to run them on every bike I get.

I was thinking about trying clipless pedals and was wondering if there was a specific type that worked well or worked very poorly for FG use? I do not understand the locking mechanism well, would back pedaling or anything that is done on a FG bike unclip you?

has anyone tried these???

https://bontrager.com/model/07820/en

dudes at my LBS rave about them and how practical they are. I guess they have a cutout in the bottom for the cleat to sit in. I think I might look like the kid in class that can't tie my shoes. I'm just kidding, i don't really care what people think about me, but just wondering if anyone uses them.

I have egg-beaters on my bike, and no, backpedaling doesn't release the clip. However, I have noticed that the egg-beaters have a lot of float for my taste. Sometimes while skidding they can come undone (depends which kind of skid, sometimes skid-stopping can cause them to come out). I've had a couple of instances where I was sprinting and magically the right pedal came out. I think the eggbeaters aren't the best for street use and are extra sensitive so there's no issues with a crash on a mountain bike like they were meant for.

That being said, my girlfriend has some candy's and I felt that they were much better. I'm keeping my beaters on my mountain bike and getting some candy's.
