Public service announcement - nyc riders

Bikers in NYC beware. The cops are out in full force this weekend trying to ticket cyclists.

I was riding home yesterday along 59th st. planning to take the Queensboro bridge back to BK. I drifted out into the intersection as the light was changing on 3rd Av and a traffic cop in a tow truck drifted through the red behind me. (No sirens no lights lit up). I yelled out, "you're a police officer, you should know better!" Probably not the smartest thing to do at that moment. This broad obviously had a chip on her shoulder/quotas to meet. She turned quickly onto 59th and I let her pass me. Then she aggressively maneuvered in front of me trying to cut me off. I ducked behind her in her blind spot and popped out on her left. She again tried to cut me off but I hopped the curb and ended up in front of her. She gave the "whoop whoop" sound of the beast and I gave her the 'shame on you' finger and rode off into traffic, banged down second ave, back across 49th, down lex, then back over to second and downtown, keenly avoiding the wrath of the NYPD.

Again today in BK as I was riding home (about a half hour ago) a cop was trailing me as I went through red lights (as is my wont). He pulled up along side me and asked me to stop. I thought of fleeing but the roads are wider out here and I'm sure he could have caught me, so I thought better of it and stopped. He told me it's illegal to run reds because bikes are considered vehicles (we know this, but the police seldom enforce it). I complied and gave him my license, he took a loot at it and told me I need to get an NY id. Then he said today is Christmas and let me go. I thanked him and went on my way.

Usually this type of **** from the NYPD follows a biker getting into an accident or someone getting hurt. If anyone has any information about accidents over the past few days, it would be appreciated. The ticketing usually lasts about a week or two so if you live in NYC, watch your ass. My advice would be to flee if you think you can make it or comply/play dumb, that tactic seems to work with cops. If you're human with them and do not show any indication of being intimidated but behave in a cordial and respectful way, they seem to respond well.

Feel free to re-post this in other threads. Just a heads up for everyone in NY. Ride safe. On the count of 3 say '**** the police! 1 2 3...'

The first cop sounded out of line, but the second sounded cool.

I run red lights, too, but I wouldn't be too mad if I got a ticket for it.

It IS illegal to run reds AND you know this, so what's your point?

You know it's a violation to run a red, you're dumb enough to taunt a cop...and then you wonder why things like this happen to you.

Go figure.

homie, I don't WONDER why this happens to me. I'm trying to give a heads up to people that the cops are ticketing. I guess bike forums is better for juvenile spats than it is for actual advice, or at least everyone considers it more fun.

just ride, y'all.

You had two random encounters with cops, and received no tickets. How do you interpret that as "the cops are ticketing?" If there had been cops sitting at an intersection or at one of the bridges waiting for cyclists to give them tickets, that'd be one thing; but two anecdotes of experiences where you just so happened to bump into a cop while you were breaking the law doesn't translate to "the cops are ticketing." What exactly do we need a heads-up for?

I think some of you miss the point if you live outside of NYC. Usually cops don't look twice when you do run a light.
Thanks for looking out bro.

That's exactly the point. There it is for those who lack reading comprehension. They usually don't give a ****, so it's more of a heads up to riders to watch their back.

this is why i put 'nyc riders' in the thread title. if you do not live in new york city, you really don't know. so go ax somebody.

btw, it's also illegal for pedestrians to jwalk, do cops regularly ticket them? no, they do not. this is a quota issue, it happens every year or so in new york city. if you live here you know that getting stopped twice in two days for running a red light on a bike IS unusual.

stay up.

I agree, that's very unusual in NY. Cops almost never care when cyclists run red lights.

Except that you didn't get a ticket, and one of the times you got stopped was because you baited the cop into stopping you...

Dude, how did you expect a cop to treat you after you did what you did?
NYC cops aint gonna take that kinda **** from a Bicyclist.
2nd Cop, if he had a quota to fill he wouldnt have given you a free pass.

I almost got Tboned by an SUV this past summer running a red (ThankYou Disc Brakes!)
I dont run reds no mo. And I wear a lid.

Hate to say it but Women Cops seem to have bigger chips on their shoulders and often times feel they must prove themselves because they are female. Ever seen some episodes of cops when the male officers already have the perp sedued after a chase, but then the female cop just roles up on the scene like they are still in hot-pursuit trying to jump in on the action.

Call me crazy, but it might be a good thing that cops are ticketing people for running red lights. Something about going through an intersection and attempting to dodge traffic on a (presumably brakeless) bicycle seems stupid.
