Double Straps

Thinking of getting some double straps but not sure on it
I'm going to be using them with one of those plastic pedals, plastic cages, nylon strap combo deals
Will I notice much difference in terms on comfort using double straps as opposed to nylon straps?
Will I notice much difference in handling (easier to stop, easier to skid)?

fuggers 02-18-09 09:32 PM

I'd recommend getting singles and spending the rest of the money on a better set of pedals and cages. I made some doubles and just used a set of nylon straps along with a nice leather set as well.

Yeah I was thinking of getting either MKS Sylvans or GR-9s along with Dimension double straps
Anyone have a recommendation for toe cages that are pretty cheap

brendon_ak 02-18-09 09:41 PM

I've got the GR-9's, along with soma double cages and toshi double straps. I couldn't be happier with them, they hold a great form, easy to slip in and out of, while maintaining plenty of tightness to actually pull up on the backstroke of the pedal.

They weren't cheap, but it is a bomb-proof setup that is absolutely perfect.

MKS alloy doubles, VO or MKS pedal, Soma leather straps

adriano 02-18-09 10:03 PM

cages, cages, cages.

if you're running brakeless, don't skimp on straps

anthegreat1 02-19-09 01:09 AM

You can easily find good deals online for MKS pedals and toe clips. I would suggest spending the money now, and never having to look back on it. Toshi Doubles FTW.

Toshi's or the MKS, in my opinion the MKS' are a nicer strap but the toshi's are a great strap as well.

So, are there double straps that aren't leather, or don't use leather? I'm a vegetarian, and I almost bought some Soma leather straps until I realized that I was almost buying leather.
So is nylon my only real option? Are there good nylon straps versus bad nylon straps? Doubles?

Lapize makes some vinyl laminate straps that have worked well for me. I've never seen them as doubles though. You could buy four of them, make some doubilizers out of whatever material you want (see fuggers picture above for an example) and you'll have a pretty strong set up. Besides just getting Toshi doubles or some of the other ridiculously expensive strips of leather with some plastic glued in the middle, I think the best one can do is use a doubilizer.

my set up is...

sylvan track pedals

toshi doubles

all city plastic clips with the slots for double straps!

so comfy and secure, get the toshis and you will have ridiculous control over your bike.

or just go clipless.

REMspeedwagon 02-19-09 04:30 AM

i honestly love the cheap as well-go double gated clips on double straps with a diy doubleizer.

Just upgraded my setup from MKS Sylvan Lites, MKS single cage, and cheap single strap to Odyssey Twisted platform pedals, Soma double cages, and MKS doubles. In the summer, I'll swap back to the Sylvan Lites with doubles. I recommend spending the money on quality, one component at a time, if you need to save.

Or is it how huuuuge my pedals are?!

I've tried Toshi's, this setup I have now was much cheaper and holds just as well. For what it's worth.

i doubt it. the clamps on quality straps are better... and toshi, mks, etc... doubles are laminated and wont stretch like cheapo leather straps.

Is there a specific reason your straps are twisted under the pedal? Sorry if this is obvious. And what about Pake Space Straps for non leather? Are they any good?

Geordi Laforge 02-19-09 01:15 PM

twisted so they dont shift
which is a problem if your straps suck.

CharneK 02-19-09 02:02 PM

Ah, that makes sense.

Well after riding them for a few months now I can say that they are nearly the same. At least to me the difference isn't worth 100 dollars.

If you have the money for the toshi doubles do it.

Question for you, do you actually adjust your straps every time you enter/ exit your pedals? I'm assuming no

KSnizzap 02-19-09 07:27 PM

You shouldn't have to if the clamps/buckles are quality. I know my old pedal set up with Toshi Doubles, I never had to adjust.
