custom chainring in US?
2 Attachment(s)
I am switching cranksets, and want to get something that is similar to the stock ring (stock ring is not 1/8). cycles underground had a very similar chainring, but since they are in australia, shipping is very cost prohibitive.
cranks are mid 80's sakae CR, ring is an image from cycleunderground's website that is something like what im looking for. (also want ring to be a 47 tooth, 144 BCD, 1/8"). i don't think the bike would look right with a big old black FSA ring, and have heard mixed reviews about some of the cheaper rings. |
anyone?

So let me get this straight: You are looking for a custom chainring to be made in the US that is cheaper that having a chainring shipped from overseas?

shipping from Australia was $73. ring was $45. that's $118 for a chainring.
i was hoping to find something in the range of $60-80 shipped, with a similar design. if i have to, i can always go with a miche or sugino 75 ring, but id love one "spiral" cut. im not getting another black ring (currently have a 130 bcd messenger ring on my 105 cranks- which im trading for this chainring). cutting a chainring isn't rocket science. if i had access to a cnc machine, id write the program and make one myself. but i don't know someone with one, and i wouldn't have the time to design one until the summer. |
man, check that shipping total again. I think the $73 is the ring w/ shipping included, not just the shipping.

Take a solid one to a machine shop and have them do it (NOT CHEAP)

I can only think of two firms that do custom chainrings. One was linked off a blog. I'll see if I can find it. The other is Highpath Engineering in the UK. To be honest, I think I'd just go ahead and buy a normal silver ring such as a Rocket Ring or TA.

You should call up OCC, you know, the washed-up motorcycle company. Since the show ended they're probably desperate for business.

Oh wait, they're in Australia.

If you are going to spend $100 for a ring, I would see if Boone Titanium will make one for you. It won't have the spun spider look, but it will be Ti, which is just plain cool.

Having a custom chainring machined is going to cost way, way, way more than having one shipped from Australia. I had to have a custom one machined out of an existing industrial sprocket blank for my motorcycle, which was just a simple bore & drill, which ended up costing me about $100 labor. I can't imagine what it would cost for something machined from scratch... I'm guessing several hundred bucks for a one-off sprocket.

http://www.cycleunderground.com.au/chainringdesigns.htm is where i was looking to get the ring from.
im not necessarily looking for a "custom" chainring, just looking for something similar to what i posted. what are the options for anything other than the TA, sugino 75, dura-ace, miche, campy, and rocket rings (will not ever order another one), or is that it? ring must be silver and in a 47 tooth ring. |
Ofmega Mistral? If you can find one....
