Re: chain whips. Not a whole lot to comment on -- they all work the same way. I have a SunTour and a VAR; they're both fine.

Agreed on the lockring tool, I have the Hozan and i'm not a huge fan, it has a tendency to strip a lockring since it only has one contact point. For a chainwhip just make your own out of an old chain and a sturdy handle. Here is the Hozan I talked about but wouldn't recomend it.

The Hozan (and tools like it) have their place. They will work on rings with an odd number of slots whereas the lockring pliers will only work on rings with an even number of slots.
