Miche Advanced machined wrong?
 

I bought a Miche advanced crankset with BB and threw them onto my project bike to find there was some play in the chainring. I'm aware that chainrings aren't perfectly round but I need a second opinion on this (or third, fourth etc). Now am I crazy or is this chainring machined wrong? (see video)

how did you tighten the bolts?

your bb shell might need to be faced. ask your lbs.

From what I can see, the crank seems to be doing at least some of the wobbling.

just to correct your usage, "play" usually refers to a looseness in an interface that shouldn't have looseness. you have a very slight wobble.

it could be a few things. it's possible that your BB needs to be faced, like erichsia said. That means they take a special tool that removes the paint and a thin layer of the surface from each side of the BB, so that the BB can sit flush in the frame. But not having it would lead the BB to make poor contact. I don't think it could make the axle sit off center (since that would involve the threads) and lead to some crank wobble. If the BB wasn't installed by somebody who knows what they are doing, it could have been put in so that the axle is off center. If this is the case then your BB threads have been stripped.

Were the cranks installed by somebody who knows what they're doing? Maybe they are not tight.

Maybe the chainring is bent from shipping now. Remove the chainring, sit the cranks against a flat surface, and see if all of the chainring shelves sit flat. Lay the chainring down to see if it lies flat.

Then report back.

For those of you who were legitimately concerned about this, It turned out to be my BB spindle

Was the BB spindle installed wrong? Or was it actually something wrong from Miche?

Manufacturing error, Got the cranks off a display bike at half price. I'm pretty thrilled that they aren't warped or anything.

i'd take that and ride the F*** out of it. honestly nothing to worry about. wont drop a chain with that slight wobble

Agreed, I think the Miche cranks are a pretty good deal for real track cranks. I've ridden 75s, Campy Record and the Miche all are very nice cranks.

People. Even if the bb shell wasn't faced by a mile it wouldn't cause oscillation like what's seen on the video. Just think about it.

Ahh, but the BB is a $20 job and nothing to write home about. Maybe he was referring to the BB? Glad it is now sorted. A Miche Advanced is probably going on my first track bike :)

Out of curiosity how did you find out? Did you try mounting the crank spider on the non-drive side to see if the wobble was still there?

I went to another LBS and asked to have it looked at. People are more helpful when you area customer than when you are an employee.

did you use the miche primato bottom bracket?

Yes, came with the cranks

You work at a bike shop and you had to go to the competition for help? Yikes! Maybe you should see if that other shop is hiring.

I have full faith in the mechanics where I work, they are all very knowledgeable and extremely capable. It's just that when you are a customer the dynamic is different, The other store was more willing to help than the mechanics I work with.

I'd suggest you toss that in teh garbage and install a regular campy cartridge bb. That is if you don't need the "adjustable chainline". That bb, is one of the ****tiest bb's ever made.
