Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? That would be 20 years younger...

To RB1luvr - What rear hub did you use? What gear ratio are you running?

To stevefromNY - How is that cross lever even usable in a practical way? I think you mounted it that far out because your using the wrong clamping size, trying to fix the problem by mounting it over the bar tape. I realize you are using it inline but please lengthen the cable housing on the outer side and move that cross lever inwards.

$50 dollars is 50 too much.

That thing looks like a kids bike. How tall are you?

Do any research on the hub you bought as far as spacing and spoke count?

been a while since I built the bike... can't remember, but counting teeth in photo (had to file every other one off on the rear to accept skip tooth chain), it looks like it's 52-22.

the rear hub is a Taiwan coaster, I think Hi-Stop brand. Works well. I have a Hi-Stop on another bike too. They roll smooth and stop well.

Anyone know of any higher quality coaster brake hubs?

I know a standard one isnt meant for constant heat and use like it might endure on a 700c SS with no other brakes. I have been thinking about building one, but I dont know of any nicer options out there. What spacing do the hubs usually come as?

sorry...gt35built...not all of us go collecting bikes off the street.
you know, some of us actually dont mind paying for things.

and $50 for a bike I am planning on just riding in the snow to class doesnt sound too bad.
saves my iro from being eaten by the road salt which is pretty win for me.

and yes sir, I did do my research. Not all of us here are incompetent, as you love to constantly suggest.

here is the hub i bought.
https://sheldonbrown.com/harris/singlespeed.html#surly

135mm spacing...perfect for my mtn bike frame which i measured to have also 135mm spacing.

as for spoke count, details werent provided, but i assume it would be either 32 or 36. ill find the rim later XD

and wow...way to be sensitive sir, as it turns out, i am insanely vertically challenged.

I think your mistaking me with the guy who stole someone else's frame off the street.

50 bucks isnt bad for a complete bike to be used for the winter, but it seems like a lost cause investing money into that bike, just to make it a single speed. If its just a beater, leave the gears on or leave it set up ss with that freewheel/stock wheel.

It was a question. Not a recommendation. Seems like he will be alright as far as spacing, and hopefully finding a 26 inch rim.

I really need to lace up more rims and not have them sit there...
And you said your MASH is not a beater, look at that poor thing upside down, wheel-less...looks abandoned.

Seriously, no more pissing and moaning about the "stolen" carpet fiber frame. It won't be relevant a month from now anyway because it will be broken (along with dsh's teeth).

Let's stick to posting pics, please.

Heh, got me there. Took off the wheels to put it on the Dawes to commute with... Only got one full set of wheels for the track/fixie bikes. That H+ son is getting laced up to a DA hub once I find someone who only wants to sell a rear.

I converted my girlfriend's Univega Nuovo Sport mixte from road to fixed.

Before:

After:

What are your thoughts on it? (Aside from replacing the crankset, which I will do soon, along with getting toe-in pedals).

Yep! Same bullhorns. I was surprised too with the drop. I guess a picture doesn't do justice.

It had the risers when we got it (used, and without any of the stock parts). Drops are a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for the saddle, it's no bigger than the usual ones. This bike's frame is just really tiny, as my girlfriend is very petite.

EDIT: How does one determine the clamp size?
