Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I think I've already got $400 of use out of this bike.
if you like worn and dirty things, why don't you wear out and dirty up your bike by riding it? then the character of your bike will be deeper than a layer of gross-looking tape.

i think he meant to tape his frame up to preserve the surface of his bike should he decide to upgrade his frame and/or sell it later on

That would take too long. I (a) only ride 5 miles a day and (b) am impatient. Also, it wouldn't match my pants.

was it hard to find one that big? I always keep an eye out for larger ones, and I rarely see anything over a 57 or so. Nice find!!!

The folder runs a 52:14 which would be 100 gear inches on a 700c bike but works out to 72 gear inches on a 20 inch wheel... and there is a 16 tooth cog on the flip side if I need to bail out.

Yep.

Folks who run even smaller wheels have to run some really extreme chain ring and cog combos to get reasonable gearing... 20 inch wheels are not that hard to deal with as you can use readily available chain rings and cogs and still get workable gearings.

With the flip flop I have 62/72 GI which is nearly identical to the gearing I use on my fixed touring bikes.

The folder is an excellent all rounder and is nearly as comfortable as my touring bikes over longer distances... the new 20 by 1.5 Schwalbe tires will also bring the comfort level up a notch without sacrificing much, if any road speed.

The curation is complete!

Although I might swap over my red tires tomorrow.

In decent light, my little Sony T7 can take nice photos, nothing compared to a DSLR, but it is the same size as a credit card. Sorry for the onslaught of photos, this is a photo thread, so I am sure it's ok!

Yes, i must restick the P!

Let me add some food for thought. The larger the ratio the more time the wheels spin and the more time the wheels spin the more distance out with each crank rev. But, consider the second part of this...the distance you get out.. For each turn on the small wheel, you get less distance, so you want one turn of the crank to turn that wheel a bunch of times so you can get the same distance as a reg 700c wheel . If we made the incorrect assumption that the diameter of a 20" wheel was half of 700c wheel, you would literally want a gear setup that lead the wheel to spin twice as much as a 700c wheel. It's pretty cool if you wrap your head around it. The problem comes when you try to talk about gear ratios across different bikes.. Sheldon B suggests gear inches.. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/...I love bikes

Snarky! Well yes and no. I guess you didn't see that our friend Astro was not aware of the "obvious"... I was just making it explicitly clear, because it's fun to think about the science of bikes. Yes it's a simple concept once your really think about it. But it does take some getting used to. Like the whole smaller gear in the back turns the wheel more, but a bigger gear up front turns the wheel more. Most people don't get that and have to think about it.
