Painting chainrings/cranks

Search function doesn't seem to yielding good - or even relevant - results right now.

I was wondering if it's possible to spray paint a chain ring without diminishing its function.

To a lesser extent, I was also considering doing the same with my cranks.

Is this a bad idea? Are there better ways of painting cranks and chain rings?

If you paint your chainring the chain will just rub the paint off where it makes contact with the chainring teeth
I'd recommend getting both your cranks and chainring anodized, as long as they are aluminum.

How do you get something anodized...is this a process you can do at home (im doubting it but...let me know!)

By the way, a guy painted my cranks and my wheels gold at an auto shop and the stuff hasnt come off yet at all and looks pretty damn good. But youd need someone at an auto shop to do it for you, like a friend or something that works at one. I can ask my friend how he did it though.

Hmm. Any idea what something like that costs?

They're Sugino Messengers.

As I understand, anodization is actually quite a process, but that's where my understanding of it ends.

Do you know what he used to paint them?

Im gonna ask him because Id like to paint my stem/handlebars black.
Heres a pic of what he did to my wheels. They were black but they were horribly scratched and I didnt want to buy all gold Weinmanns or Velocitys, the rims I had were fine with the bike.

Anyway, the paint job is really good and he coated it with some sort of clear coat thats keeping it from chipping at all. Ill find out what he used/how he did it. As far as I know it hasnt caused any "problems" with riding or effectiveness of parts.

you can spray a ring; the teeth will become bare after a few miles, but the rest of the ring will remain painted.
cranks will stay painted, but you will get paint rub on the insides of your shoes and pants, etc.

if you want durability, get them powdercoated. my gf rides a powdercoated crank set to match her frame; they look amazing.

I'd avoid painting the teeth simply because it seems like the chain might get a bit gummed up with the paint that gets rubbed off, but the actual ring and crank itself should be fine to paint.

Powdercoating is also good. How did she do that Sp00ki, or where did she do that?

my boy knows of a spot that does engine parts. they really need their hand held to do bike parts (masking, etc) and take forever, but charge roughly 1/5th the price of places that specialize in bikes, and don't up-charge for colors they don't have in stock (bubblegum pink, in this case).

Looks like the only way youll get a really good job done on your cranks is by going somewhere, or just buying anodized parts.

Whatever they use for cars is what my guy used.
As far as I know, he didnt do anything you couldnt do. He didnt heat dry or use any fancy machinery, he just painted them and put some really strong clear coat on em. Maybe google what simple methods people use to repair paint jobs on cars?

The front wheel was machined so he puts a gummy-ish, rubbery glue around that part to protect is from the paint, does the paint job, applies the clear coating thing and then he peels off the glue in one peice when dry so the original machined rim is still there, as far as I know.

Muckymucky-Yeah its a better picture, I think everything on the bike is just IRO. Im gonna take your advice on the stem/bars.

sorry to sidestep the topic, but i kinda miss this bike built up like that.
she rides much faster/harder/frequently/etc now, so there have been lots of upgrades since:
-bladed carbon seatpost
-carbon risers (painted pink by calfee design to match)
-short syncros stem (white)
-profile design bdc fork (painted glossy white, also by calfee)
-chris king headset

the old version makes me feel like a dad watching a little girl grow up and go to college only to come home with a piercing and a lesbian "roommate".

Yo spooki does your girl live/work at temple? I've seen a bike with bubblegum pink everything locked outside of 1810 many times.

she graduated last year, though it's been awhile since she locked that bike up. she rides a teal group buy as a beater (though it too is built up kinda nice... d.a. headset, cinelli xe stem, syntace stratos bars, selle san marco aspide glamour saddle, etc). i don't think you would've seen that bike locked up since '07...
it's sorta become a sunday bike, but a bunch of us are tinkering with the idea of getting a membership to the velodrome so we can work on sprinting. if that happens, it'll change even more.

not that you asked all that.
