Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Thats pretty brutal!

The only girl on a fixed gear I've ever seen here was like three years ago track standing at a light, before I even knew what track standing was. And as to your comment about seeing them in videos, I find that every time I watch a video about a Seattle event, I'm blown away by the amount of people riding fixed. Maybe its because I don't go downtown to often, but I do go by the U all the time, and don't see where all these people are coming from.

Yeah I dont either, I know Ive seen one girl riding fixed here in Beacon Hill, and theres that one I saw in a video clip that was doing some pretty impressive stuff. I dont ride downtown very often either but ride to Cap hill almost everyday. I definitly see the guys around but no girls. Where abouts do you live?

I live in Fremont, most of my riding is up through green lake to lake city and out around the U district. In general I don't see to many people riding fixed, but definitely more guys than girls. Its weird because in general cycling has a pretty even ratio of guys to girls.

My exgf in San Francisco is trying to get me to help her pick out a track bike, and I think if anything she should probably go single speed. She hasn't ridden since childhood, and even then it doesn't seem like she was really into it until the current fixed hipster resurgence in SF =/

Ya, thats how most people are with the whole fixed thing, guess it depends on your comfort level of riding bikes in general too. I ride longboards through traffic so the switch to a fixed gear was actually a little easier since you have control. That and I have been riding some sort of bike forever.

Bicycling did a "sex" issue a year or two ago (not that I was interested, but the cover photo was not bad). Anyway, after studying every word, I learned that the ratio of guys to girls is 5-to-1. So they were saying, if you're a guy, interesting in hooking up with the opposite sex, the odds are against you. Again, not that I would be remotely interested in that sort of thing.

I am a lady and did not start riding bicycles because of my boyfriend. He's actually a lazy fart that is too nervous to ride on a road. Should can his ass.

Thats probablly true for a fair fraction, Im sure a lot of girls switched from road to fg (that was my transition anyway) and my boyfriend definitley didnt get me into it. Hes a stoner metal head dude that doesnt want to run around too much, which given hes got a really bad knee, its not his fault.

I'm female with a fixed gear bike in LA.

Met several female fixed riders, seen lots more around.

Not another in my, ahem, age category, though.

I'm just waiting, as I know older guys who ride fixed.
