Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

A big thumbs up to Montano Velo in Oakland!

I drove an hour each way to get the parts I needed to get my Deep V/Formula hub serviced. They did it on the spot for an honestly good price. My local bike shop here quoted me at 30$ for labor + additional parts fees. I told them that was a rip off and dishonest charge for not doing a real overhaul.

The folks in Oakland charged me 12$ for labor/axle/cones/nuts out the door for like 35$. It saved me from buying a new wheel. I was also happy to see them torque the hell out of the cog and lockring with proper tools.

Anybody struggling in the North Bay California wanting a good honest parts service for fixed gear needs should get out of dodge and see this people.

I tried on two pairs of shoes, no attitude, even though my socks were grubby. They offered to discount an old pair of shoes...Still not paying 100$ for shoes made in China. Nothing against them but I'm simply not going to buy a shoe that will have inferior fabric. The Italian made shoe they had for a hefty price was of superior quality and worth every penny. It did not fit my wide feet.

So its toe straps/cages until I get an SPD shoe that fits without hot spots. Some things in the shop seemed priced a bit steep but the fact they have the inventory they do makes them worth supporting. It is a damn shame that almost every single bicycle shop in the Sonoma county area is an absolute rip off in the service department.

I know a lot of newbies are ignorant about how easy it is to service a bicycle but charging 30/25$ to install a cartridge bearing or bottom bracket is highway robbery. I would gladly pay a shop to properly repack my hubs with new bearings or adjust my bottom bracket with loose ball for 25$. But using a 10$ tool to put a cartridge unit in under 10 minutes is robbery.

I raise a pint glass to to good folks in the bay area bicycle shops. I shake a can of coors light and aim it at the nor-cal stores in pure spite! You guys are ignorant and charge what a certified Mercedes mechanic chargers per hour.

You think you have it bad? Come to middle of nowhere, PA. $40 to have two wheels trued, and they weren't even done correctly.

I'm glad you looked around and found a good deal though. You should def. support a shop that is legit like that.

Why don't you just buy tools from this fine internet of ours and do the work yourself? Sure is a lot cheaper!
