Which bike should I get for casual street riding?

Hey guys, sorry if this question has been asked a million times before, but I'd like some advice on which bike to get. Currently, I have a felt bmx bike that I bought back in 2008, but it's become more and more impractical to ride around my university campus and around Los Angeles. I have my bmx up on craigslist and looking to replace it with a fixie. I've read around and noticed that the Kilo TT is a very popular bike to get, but I wanted to know if there are any better alternatives.

I live in Los Angeles and the roads can kinda get rough, but my commutes aren't long at all, maybe 2-3 miles each way. I read around and saw that some recommended the Windsor Clockwork or the Moto Messenger for city riding. I'd like to keep costs as low as possible, but will consider all recommendations.

My local bike shop has some Corsa and Masi fixies, but the Masi's are a bit too expensive for me. I tried doing a bit of research on Corsas but couldn't find much. I'm pretty sure I can get a much better deal on better brands from Bikesdirect.

Also, what are the major differences (if any) between The Hour and Clockwork?

I originally wanted to get a kilo tt, but don't have the money for it so I'm looking more at the ~$300 range.

If you don't have the money, do you have any mechanical skills and/or are you willing to learn on the job? Bike mechanics isn't hard to learn and easier to do, there's not much you can stuff up which a bike shop can't unstuff, and it opens up the world of second hand bikes. Theoretically, this should give you better value for your money though that depends somewhat on what you buy and if you don't know what you're looking at ... Still, being able to get on a bike and ride it will tell you more than any website or internet forum.

I actually love doing mechanical type work, but I'm just asking which bike is the best bang for the buck and would be decently equipped to give me a good riding experience for my first fixie. I will most likely end up buying more parts later when I have the money, but right now I need a bike to ride to get to places. I'm liking the Moto Record, but I'd like to hear your guys' inputs.

I prefer steel so I'd go with Moto Track. I like its looks better than the clockwork.
