Converting cluster (not cassette) MTB to SS
 
I have a MTB I use for commuting, am thinking of going SS cause it's flat around here.

I use 5th gear (7spd) and the middle ring, when I hit the ever so small rises I just spin faster to get over them with ease. Any tips on how to do this easily? I'll start by just converting the rear mech to SS, then later get rid of multiple chainrings. How do I convert the cluster? can I get single screw on cogs for it?

If it is a freewheel cluster, unscrew the thing and just take the whole thing off and spin on a Shimano Freewheel and re-dish the wheel so that it is centered in the rear drops. You can probably swop the spacers from one side of the axle to the other. I did that on my wifes' old freewheel mtb and it worked perfectly. Cheap quick and dirty.

Depending on your dropouts, you might need a chain tensioner. Surly makes a good one but its almost 50$US.
