Conversion candidate
What would you pay for this? I want to convert it to single speed. It's an 80's Trek 400

Don't take this the wrong way, but you'd be a fool if you convert that Trek.
|
That could be a decent road bike if you swapped out a few parts (brakes and levers, saddle, seatpost, etc). Doesn't seem half as nice as some other early 80's Treks I've seen though. I wouldn't feel too guilty converting it if it were a fair price.

If you want a track bike, look elsewhere, but if you want a good fixed gear for the road, this will be perfect. The shifters are clamp on, so you don't have the unsightly bosses, and you don't have to dremel anything. Just leave both brakes on, and try to to tarck it out too much. |
Not too nice to strip the gears off of, good enough to ride well, nice enough paint to want to keep it, minimal braze-ons , available - Good conversion candidate!
Do it! Just park the dremmel and powdercoat/spraybombs, OK? |
You guys are right, It's just that I can't stand seeing a perfectly good road bike converted! I've got a sweet Univega that I may be converting (since Im getting no bites on C-List) but only because the RD hanger was stripped and cracked.

You asked what someone would pay for a Trek 400 steel frame road bike. Typically they sell for $150 to $200 as is. That price may vary depending on how hot the bike market is in Idaho Falls.
Generally, Trek steel road bikes are popular because they all seem to have a very nice ride. |
Well it's 50 bones and I decided to leave it as a road bike and just change a few things. I already have a fixie so don't need to ruin this
|
50 bucks... Dang.
I've been bike shopping non-stop here.... Everyone wants so much for their bikes... Ugh |
