why 105??

i get the name dura-ace (durable + ace?); ultegra sorta makes sense too (ultimate + alegra? latin something?).

what does 105 mean? it's such a step away from everything shimano calls its groups...

evidently, no you don't. not at all.

alphanumeric nomenclature is relative. there's nothing to get.

sp00ki 03-28-09 01:49 PM

remove the question marks.

they've evidently confused you...

REMspeedwagon 03-28-09 01:49 PM

explain the Shimano 600 set then.
105 has been around for a while.

sp00ki 03-28-09 01:56 PM

600 became ultegra almost 20 years ago.
105 has been around since ~5 years prior to that, but never got a name change.
it seems to be the only group shimano offers without a phonetic name, and the only one ever without a repeating number.

Since it's the middle road group, maybe they just left it to make it obvious? Nice stuff, not too pricey, not too flashy, good for commuting and just reliable in general.

So yeah..no idea. But I know its 'good enough' and easy to find if something does break...

mihlbach 03-28-09 04:48 PM

wrong forum.

Don't question. Just ride.

Not really. There are quite a few parts from the 105 groupo that are often used on FG/SS ie cranks, brake calipers, etc

right.

Why don't you call Shimano? Unless you're simply bored and want to start a pointless thread. If that's the case, then you've succeeded.

I'm aware of that, but my point was that you are asking the wrong people. There is a 100% chance that several people on the road cycling forum will know the answer. Basically no one here knows or cares. Its the wrong forum to ask this.
