Quill Stems
I am in the market for a new, 26mm clamp diameter, quill stem. I am also on a budget so I was immediately drawn to the Nitto Technomic stems. I have a question about measurements that I can't seem to get a straight answer to:
When they say that a stem has a certain length (i.e. 50mm length or 120mm length) does that mean the length of the part that sticks into the steering tube OR the length of the piece that sticks forward and connects to the handlebars. The Ben's cycle description says "want to get your handlebars up high?" which makes me thing that this measurement is for the length of the piece that sticks INTO the steering tube. It's kind of confusing If it is the length of the piece that sticks out over the tire and connects to the handlebars, I would want a long one. I have a 58cm frame, is there a certain size that is recommended for this size frame? I do like to be leaning forward... |
The angle or degree is how much the stem will slant downwards or upwards
The measurement, 50mm,60mm,.... is how long the "piece sticks forward" As for how long, If you like leaning forward I'd try to find one 100mm or longer |
I wish I knew proper terms for this parts of the stem, but the piece that sticks into the steering tube, is that a standard length?

the technomic is pretty tall.

Yeah I know those are supposed to be long, and now that yall have explained what that means I know that the piece that sticks into the steering tube is probably long. If I have a 58cm bike, would there be a long enough head tube to compensate for that extra height?
|
...depends on how high you want the stem.
|
If you want a really tall stem so you can ride really upright, get the technomic.
If you want a normal height stem, get the nitto pearl (also available in a 26mm clamp version). The length refers to the stem length (part that sticks out over the tire), so if you want a long reach, get a long stem length. I have a nitto pearl, and I love it. I also have a cinelli x/a 130mm stem length if you are looking for one that long, pm me, and we can work something out. I'm not using it, and it needs a home. (it's in the want to trade thread if you want to see it). |
Man!!! You should have showed up at today's Frankenbike. I got a few cheap 25.4 26.0, and 26.4 stems in various lengths 90-130mm.

The stem "length" generally refers to the extension, or how far ahead of the steer tube the handlebar will sit.
The Nitto "Technomic" is a specialty stem, with a much longer than typical height so a rider can raise the bars higher than would otherwise be possible. |
+1 for frankenbike i was there for a bit
