I was thinking about building up a bike with the bike island kilo frame, but I'd like to get an idea of what I can get with the amount of money I want to spend and also get a few ideas. I figure I spend between 400 to 600 since I have a few extra parts sitting around.

after the frame i spent about $100 on parts that i didn't have yet. I already had a wheelset, crankset, pedals, stem, and bars

I built mine up into a commuter for a little more than I paid for the bike. Ouch. But it's great. Started with a TT Pro ($400), threw on CF APX seatpost and my saddle of choice, did a flop/chop on a cheap 6061 anatomic road bar, conti ultra gatorskins, shimano spd/platform pedals, new brake pads (the stock ones _will_ eat your rims) and lights front/rear. I also added a white industries DOS freewheel to the free side, and replaced the fixed cog with one that was 3/32 compatible.

So it ended up being around $1000 total. I could have bought a $1000 bike, but I wouldn't be as happy with it because now I have all the components of my choice and the pleasure of building up the bike just the way I want. I'm laying even odds that either the stock bottom bracket and/or the rear hub will need replacing after a while, too.

I guess it's a good deal if you really just want to build up a bike. You are basically getting a decent frame and wheelset + crankset for $400. Deal. Everything else is debate-able, but rideable out of the box.
