Chainring size?
So I recently built a SS Mountain bike and I am looking to run a primary chainring for city riding. What size chainring would you recommend for me.
The bike will not be doing a whole lot of hill climbing more of urban cruising. Here are my current stats on the bike: Frame: Swobo Folsom Frame Bars: Swobo Folsom Handelbar Headset: Chris King NoThread Set-11/8 Stem: Elite 5d 110mm Thomson Front Hub: Chris King Front Disc Hub-32-h Read Hub: Chris King Rear ISO SSP Hub-32h w/ 18t Cog Skewers: CrankBrothers Split Crank: Surly Mr. Whirly w/ 94x33t Pedals: CrankBrothers XX 50/50 Sealed Bearings w/ Orange Inserts Breaks: Avid 09 BB7 Disc Break Mnt Front/Reare 160mm Rotor Rims: Sun CR-18 26" 32h PV Rim 559 ISO Spokes: DT Champoin 2.0 914ga 262mm Seatpost: Ritchey Pro Thanks for your help. |
Yo. I've got the same bike. I just swapped the 32 ring for a 42. So now I'm 42x16...freewheel. Perfect for the streets of Los Angeles.

I recently purchased a single speed that came with a 42t chainring, but its a commuter/road bike frame with 700x28c tires. A 42 would work, but you may need a 17 or 18t freewheel on the rear to make up for any extra weight, or rolling resistance from fatter tires. My bike has a 16t freewheel, but I'm considering swapping it with an 18t to enable me to climb hills easier. I've only had to get off and walk it up one steep hill so far, but I haven't rode up long hills yet either.
