Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? It slips a lot. It looks like the chain stretches under load and won't stay on the sprocket. I don't have this problem with my Suntour 3/32 freewheel chainwhips. Anyways, I don't use it anymore and instead use my trusty old Var cog removal tools that simply hook onto a cog tooth.

@Scrod -- **** YA!

@everyone else about chainwhip -- I didnt really get a good deal on the chain whip, it's the only one my lbs had for 20.99 USD, and I didn't wanna wait . Hopefully it works out.

@TT -- mind me asking, what was your method for installing cogs and lockrings?

grease and install the cog with your hand, use a chainwhip on it, then with your bike secured on a wall or something, get as much leverage on the pedals as you can, then install the lockring normally?

or is that how you should always do it? lol

I went to the Albuquerque Bike Swap on Saturday. Ended up with new pedals, cranks, and bottom bracket.
I also bought a Sears "Free Spirit" for $50 on a whim.

But I don't like PBR. And it looked like a fun bike. And now that I've ridden it, I like it a lot. Not the greatest bike, but a good, cheap backup.

Thanks!

If it ends up being worth less than a case of PRB then I'll let you tell me that you told me so.

if you're gonna bother with the bike against the wall crap, might as well not even bother with the chainwhip.

my favorite chain tool for fixed gear shenanigans is the shimano tool with the lockring spanner built in. makes everything so easy. aaron would've let you use his for boba probably.

Woo new ****!

-FSA 20mm Carbon headset spacer
-snagged a Campy Nuovo Record hubset one ebay for a combined $55! Rear is in amazing shape with a mirror finish (French threaded though..), and front needs a polish and bearing overhaul but after that I'll finally be on my way to a legitimate campagnolo wheel build, stoked. Maybe I'll post pics a bit later.
-Sachs-Maillard 5 speed french-threaded freewheel for the Campy NR hub
-Campy Nuovo Record 44t Chainring, $10! Almost no wear. Ebay addiction growing. Now just have to find a nice 144BCD pair of crank arms that won't drain my bank acct.

calv - you're not a 200 lb gorilla like me but I twisted one of those Wheels MFG chainwhips pretty badly the first time I used it.
