Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? i own a pair of these, but i don't ride a fixed gear. i just bought them because i though they looked dope.

i own the ones with the white sole though, and the reflective strip around the rim.

If they have the same sole as regular vans, they're garb. Simbas or clipless - nothing else.

they don't have a stiffer sole, instead the whole 'upper' is made of some wacky rubberized stiffened fabric to prevent toe clip damage. neat idea, cause i do kinda smush my era's from time to time on climbs.

Thicker canvas over the toes, keeps the cages from wearing out the shoes so fast.

If someone called a shoe fixed gear friendly, I'd expect them to provide some way of preventing the shoe laces from accidentally getting wound up in the cranks. Some way aside from tucking in the shoes laces or whatever you do.

sounds like marketing for stupid people. I was expecting spd-compatible vans or some sort of stiffer sole velcro shoe that might be cool. but nope...

i got some white & black ones a month ago or so, only because they were marked way down, i only realized when i got home that they had a cog screenprinted on the heel when i got home, haha. i can't tell that they're extra strong or anything, though they're the only vans i own currently.

I like the idea, but would only wear them if they had a stiffer sole too.

i bought them on the cheap from finalscore.com. also check out 6pm.com

i really hate the idea of a fixed gear targeted sneaker, but i bought the blue ones with the yellow midsole because of the dark toe on the midsole, which hides the tire marks from the toe overlap.

i also wear nike sb blazer lows and mids (or highs, whatever theyre considered) and eras/authentics. ive seen pics of prolly wearing the dunk mids, which blows my mind. i have no idea how he fits those beasts in the clips.

vans also just released the 106 vulcanized very recently, which seems to be a cross between the chukka low and slip ons. its kind of like the boat shoe for people who wouldnt be caught dead in boat shoes (me).

i got a pair in charcoal/purple before there were anywhere online (pats self on back). i actually googled them when i saw them in the local skate shop and only one site carried them, and even google had very few results about them. in the two weeks since i bought them, though, they are now pretty much everywhere, including urban outfitters (damn them)

i find that the blazers are a bit too snug. meaning, i have to really cram them in there, which damages the sneaker. i like my nikes crisp, my vans are my beaters haha
