Roadkill on a bike?

Ok... dont everyone butcher me for posting this... but today while i was riding to work i was going through some resedential neighborhoods looking for a road that had less traffic, when a gray tabby started crossing the road. He didnt look at me, so i naturally started slowing down, but becasue it was a cat and cats usually dart when they see someone they arent used to i didnt slow down too much. i was going slow already because i was looking at road signs and i was not in a hurry... then the cat looked at me, and istead of taking off like a bat out of hell it kept on its steady pace that what do you know put him right in my way, it was like he was playing chicken with me... anyways long story short i hit a cat with my bike, i didnt hit him hard because he won the game of chicken and i skided/bunny hopped his neck, that is when he remembered how cats are supposed to act and it was like a lightning bolt of grey blurr into the yard where he came from... count that 8 lives left for him. i was left dumbfounded at what had just happend...

has anyone else got a story like this?

I was driving in the country one time, and way off to the right, I see this big ol' rabbit going boing boing boing boing...finally he gets out to the road just as I'm going past and I hit him. Don't know what he was thinking.

Out by Pecos, Texas, there is a road that cuts back north (through Orla, seems like) to go to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is the most desolate area you can imagine. But there's roadkill on it. A hippopotamus could stand out there for 10 minutes and not get hit, how does some little critter get hit going across?

I was riding on my road bike along the canal in Ottawa (not on the MUP...on the road...) when out of nowhere a duck flew into my front wheel...scared the crap out of me and it was just like in the cartoons with a huge explosion of feathers. The duck seemed to be OK and just walked it off and I was in shock, lol. Spent the next 15 minutes plucking feathers off my derailleur and out of my cassette... Thank god my front wheel didn't suffer any damage and thank god it wasn't one of those 60 pound Canada geese, that would have knocked me right over.

Anyways, doesn't really count as roadkill, but it was pretty damn close.

I've hit pigeons a couple of times. They usually react in time to miss the wheel but tend to bounce off the headtube or once off my helmet. Idiotic birds

My dog nailed a Muskrat in the backyard last night. Does that count?

I ran over a goose with my bike. It was pretty funny. The stupid thing stood there and got ran over. I didn't mean to do it. It squacked like a demon from hell and then jumped in the lake.

Ran over a squirrel with my rear wheel once. It ran back into the bushes afterward.

I ran over one as well. Dumb thing was safely off to the side in the grass, but when it saw me coming, it made a mad dash across the MUP toward the pond. I was amazed how firm it was, like running over a football. last seen it was sitting in the pond squawking it's unhappiness.

On another occasion, one of the dumb things tried to attack me. It had just gone airborne when one of the brake levers on the mtn bike hit it right in the chest, knocking it backward out of the air.

one time i ran over a turtle after getting dropped off of the back of a paceline. i'd just finished pulling and didn't speed up enough at the end and couldn't quite catch them. as i was being dropped i looked down in time to see a little teensy turtle, probably the size of a little debbie oatmeal pie.
the sound of its shell crushing under my wheels was gross. the incident was quite appropriate since i'd just been dropped for not being fast enough.
i didn't stop, but the whole thing traumatized me for the rest of the ride.

I've almost hit plenty of squirrels on the trail... and there was a deer laying behind a log one time. I came up to the log, got my front wheel on it and A DEER popped up and ran off... scared the bejeezus out of me.

My brother also hit a squirrel on GA Tech's campus.

Cool story. Sounds like a dumb cat. I doubt you hurt him too bad.

carkmouch 04-12-09 10:21 AM

I came about a foot from running over a squirrel before hitting the brakes one time on campus, I thought the dude was gonna bite it for a sec.

Also, I lol'ed at the part where the cat finally darted off in the cat story. I can imagine it being all cool and chill like a cat and then OH *****!

blankgen 04-12-09 10:57 AM

Saw something in the road forum where a squirrel ran, no tried to run, through the front wheel and was killed by the spokes. Blood spatter on the bike and everything.

I had a cat hit me. This cat came out of know where. It ran into my bb, then I think I ran over it. It scared the crap out of me!!!

It ran off really fast. I felt really bad about it but hopefully it pulled through.

I also hit a squirrel and it did the same to my fork as the picture above. The fork buckled at the crown and my face went into the ground. I was going about 20 and I ended up fracturing my scapula. That squirrel cost me a lot of time and money! I still weird our when I am riding and see a squirrel.

I have also squashed a few chipmunks on my mtb.

I have come close to hitting a few turkeys. Those things are big and there are a lot of them here!
