Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

......Or just get your hands heavily tattooed like I did. You don't notice the grease as much.

Dunno man, this makes my hands get dry and skin gets wrinkles/loose it's stretchyness.

I put on blue park tools gloves before using the parts cleaner and keep em on after, but they end up getting holy shortly after, usually from gears or unfinished cables. When I notice one has a hole I throw it out and don't put a new one on until I have to use the parts cleaner again. At the end of the day a shower gets off most of what's gotten on my hands, but my nails are always dirty.

EG, washed well with normal soap but no shower yet:

When I don't feel like getting greasy I use cheapo harbor freight blue nitrile gloves...they rip and melt in solvents but so cheap i just put on another one. Anything other than skin tight gloves ruin the "feel" of wrenching. Mechanix or Ringers gloves are for working on cars and heavy duty stuff.
Normally for bike work I don't use gloves. I hope to have hands of leather by time I am 60

Invest in a two dollar nail brush and some pumice soap or the orange gritty stuff. Regular soap does nothing.

Myeah when I take a shower washing my hair cleans my nails and hands mostly, for the rest I got an old toothbrush there for that, works pretty well and my hands end up pretty clean. Orange gritty stuff I've tried & didn't like, makes my hands feel real dry. Meanwhile regular (dish) soap when I leave the shop is good enough to stop me from marking everything I touch with bike grease.

My experience is that vinyl and latex will dissolve in some degreasers (e.g. mineral spirits/paint thinner). Nitrile gloves don't.

N.B. When I worked in the shop I never used gloves, but now that my day job -- the one that pays the bills -- is in a hospital providing "hands-on" care, I can't come to work with old grunge on my hands, so I keep them clean.

Baby oil does an amazingly good job getting grease off your hands. Just regular baby oil.

You know there's nothing wrong with getting your hands a bit dirty. And anyway, it's probably a good excuse for you modern, man/girls to go buy some more skin conditioner. Sheesh....!

all joking aside, keeping your hands moisturized protects them against the frequent washing/degreaser (which also strips your skin of natural oils), as well as makes any foreign stuff less likely to adhere to your skin.
