Computers are DISPOSABLE

Computers are DISPOSABLE!

You get a few years out of them, then they are put in the closet or tossed out. Nothing is sadder than an old machine. They literally WON'T be useable after a while. Sure, they may still boot, but you won't want to do any real work on any consumer machine older than about 5 years, let alone 10 years. Laptop batteries wear out and a new one is as much as the replacement value of the machine after 3 years. Sure, if I think real hard and pull out a nose hair I may tear up about that old 12 MHz 286 with an amber monitor that was my first PC but no way would I try to keep something like that alive, let alone work on it.

Get a bike. I have a 20 year old bike that I've ridden the crap out of. Still works. Still as fun as ever. Still can get parts for it. Still love it.

Get the bare minimum computing hardware you can get away with and spend the rest on something that will give you everlasting joy.

a replacement battery for my computer is $80. maybe thats how much YOU payed for your laptop, but i cant say the same for myself.

Glad you can take a joke. i forgot the v-neck, but that was too easy anyway. i might come up for the midsummer whatever, maybe ill see u there.

the aluminum frame macbook is plenty for you unless youre editing tons of music or video. go for it. and the bike. im super jealous.

Look at ebay prices for three year old laptops. Then compare THAT price to the cost of a new battery for them. Not a very good ratio.

DO you like bikes in general or just fixed gears? I agree with the other posters that said you should get a different kind of bike so you can have a nice variety, 4 FGs is a little bit overkill IMO, unless you are only into one kind of riding, which I could respect.

I like bikes in general ... I started with a 10 speed road bike. It was a lot of fun, but then I got into riding fixed gears and I kind of fell in love with it. I do, however, want to branch out, because I do really just love biking. The reason I ended up with so many fixed gears is because I get sick pleasure out of doing conversions.

But yeah, if I do get something different, it'll be a CX bike which I will take on the trail and also do CX on. A few of my friends have been trying to get me to do it, and it looks fun as hell. Usually it's just the problem of me GETTING to the event as I do not own a car. Hah.

i would provide you with a link but, alas, i cant ebay from work. you can go check how much a 12" powerbook g4 is going for if you want tho. then we can stop arguing about how wrong you are.

JackD 04-24-09 12:29 PM

Toast,

So, yeah, the G4 is about a third to a quarter of original price - going for about 3 batteries. But then the G3 is about $25-50 = less than 1/2 a battery. Anything older than that is of historical value only. Don't worry, you will learn this in time. Probably a year into your next laptop.

oneangrytoast 04-24-09 12:32 PM

hmm last i checked they were still well over $500. that was before the release of the new new macbooks though. im sure you also chose to quote the ****tiest, beat up, lacking RAM model, but thats ok. i know my laptop still kicks ass. and its 4 years old and in pristine condition.
