im riding platforms like an idiot right now, but clips looks nice.
How easy/hard is it to get in and out of clipping? I'm looking to upgrade. OK, first off, dont consider it an "upgrade" until you give them a try, lots of peple like them for very good reasons, but more than a few dont like them for very good reasons. With a little practice you can get used to clipping in and out in a metter of minutes, use a doorway, place your bike in the doorway, get on your bike and practice clipping in and out while sitting on your bike using the doorway to hold you up, its pretty easy after you get the hang of it, then go out and ride, ride, ride, till you feel comfortable, then make up your mind if you want to keep them or go back to your clips. :) BTW, I rode Haro magnesium platforms for years before I went to road pedals with clips, just remember that in the end its what works for you and not what everyones using. |

uh half these posts seem to be saying clipless are cages and cages are clipless....
clipless refers to a toe-clip-less system of retention, like SPD, TIME, etc, while the other things are toe-clips, or cages using a strap for retention. annnnyway. clipless is superior for performance, retention, all that, but the shoes do not go well with all of my cloths so I still rock cages on some weekends, looking to get a hot pink double strap system sometime. really, being able to wear the shoes you want is important if you ride everywhere. i've met messengers who wear their cycling shoes everywhere, but they seem to only own cycling clothes too so its okay for them. for me I dont think i have a dress or skirt or pantsuit that sidis would look good with |
Yeah, clipless for me too. I ride eggbeaters with sidi mountain bike shoes. I started biking on a mountain bike and thought it was overkill to purchase road specific shoes. What I found is that for the city, the treads on the bottom keep me from slip and sliding when its time to go for a walk. To my eye, clips look seriously dangerous to get out of in an emergency situation, not that I've ever really tried them.

clips/straps for tricking and alleycat races, easier to trick on platforms and also on races sometimes you have to walk up steps, hills, etc.
clipless SPD-SL road pedals for everything else (which is pretty much 90% of my riding) |

It's a bicycle, not a fashion show. No one looks good in cycling gear, it's function not fashion.
fashion follows function is what you're trying to say except you're too stupid. Also, the fact is that you don't look good in cycling gear, other people do. Mirrors scare you and you scare other people, but some of us look good despite the fact that you're ugly or pudge out wrong in cycling gear. It has nothing to do with me that you rock k-mart cages or can't afford shoes, kid |

i hate that people make these threads like it's some amazing revelation.
everyone knows what clipless is. everyone who rides more than twenty miles already uses clipless pedals. carrying a second pair of shoes for the five mile ride to work or go crosstown with friends is unnecessary, which is why most people on this forum still ride clips on one of their bikes. the last thing i want to do on a friday night is lug a backpack and change of shoes around with me. |
