Do you also own a road bike?
Was just curious and wondering if you SS/fixie guys also owned a road bike (i.e. shifters and all). Or are you guys pretty much one way or another and decided to go fixed gear all the way?

I can go one better than just owning a road bike, I turned my FG into an internally geared road bike.
Motobecane Messenger w/ SRAM S-7 [7 speed] IGH. lots of fun! I'm planning on picking up a Kilo WT(F) when they become available to replace the messenger.
(I've fixed the angle of the bars since this pic was taken)
Other geared bikes:
I also have a Raleigh Detour Deluxe "commuter" bike that is geared (w/ 700c wheels, disc brakes, rack, fenders, dynamo lighting, etc.)
I also have a Felt Q720 hardtail mtb that sees almost as much time on the pavement as it does off road.

Aside from my ss/fg bike, I've got my other commuter/brevet bike (fully geared Cross Check) and a utility cruiser (geared rigid MTB).

On this same topic, I always found it weird when people at my college purchased a fixed gear as their first bike...

I have a number of geared bikes that range from the 3 speed on my old roadster to the 24 speeds on my mtb and hybrid bikes.
My vintage Peugeot has a whopping 8 speeds as 4 speed blocks were common back in the 50's.
The fixed gear bikes and the hybrid log the most miles as the road bike and mtb are more function specific.

I've got a Basso Gap 10 sp and Univega Ital Sport 7 sp. I've been riding my roadies more and more over the last year or so. I'll probably put well over 2000 miles on the basso this season, and maybe a few hundred on my fixed.

I ride mostly road bikes but choose the fixed gear for around town or when I ride with my wife as it's easier to match her speed that way.

i think that many of us came from a road bike background, and hence may have other bikes. I had a tri bike and a couple road bikes before i got a fixed gear. on the other hand, a lot of the guys my age (highschool- college) seem to get into cycling via fixed gears, and end up getting all roadied out once theyve been introduced to cycling culture

Oui! I do. The ss/fg was a good project bike. I learned how to build my own wheels, strip and paint a frame, etc.
The road bike was also a project bike when I got it too. Learned how to run cables/drivetrain systems, change cassettes/chains/cranks, install pedals, fix shifting issues, etc.

I have two road bikes - a touring bike and a 'racing' bike.
I like my mtbs more, though, and if I can trust what my watch has been telling me, they're not any slower in the city.

I haven't ridden my road bike in a couple weeks, though. I kind of like the idea of doing longer, harder rides on the FG. Has anyone out there stopped riding their road bike on long rides and just taking the fixed? I live in a place w/ hills so riding FG on my long (30-50 mile) rides could be a serious work out. But I couldn't ever race it, really...
