Back on topic, when I started riding again last Fall, my artist of choice was Tristan Prettyman, particularly in the fall. As I said earlier, for the past week or so, it's been almost exclusively Nuuro. Before that, it was a solid month or so of Emiliana Torrini, whether in the car or on the bike. I wonder what it will be a month from now...

i make my own beats in my head sometimes or tune into one that's already playing

sure sure, but to imply that you would get some sort of matter-of-fact, itoldyouso, satisfaction from the notion that another rider was injured or worse killed is pretty dispicable.
also, this thread was intended as a discussion for those who do enjoy music while riding. if you don't like music or don't listen to it while you ride, more power to you. don't poop on others who do though.
i wonder if runners are as mean to eachother as bike riders?

I don't listen to tunes much while biking but was considering the Slipstreamz product called the Slip. I've found a cheaper effective solution with these Phillips headphones. I've found that I hear vehicles from behind even better than without any headphones/buds...particularly when riding into the wind. And I never need [nor want] the volume up much....and never anywhere but out in the boonies. Not to mention they keep my ears a bit warmer on cold riding days.

The only time I ride with music is when I'm dorking around on the BMX and away from traffic. Heavy doses of Maiden, Sabbath and Zeppelin usually.

+1 to giving things the first listen while riding. I buy a lot of cds (i feel like i'm the only one left these days who does) and have trouble finding time to listen to them. time in the sadle out on the country roads gives me the opportunity to just press play and let them play through. this week was the new mastadon, new kylesa, dillinger four vs. god, and black flag live '84

In some jurisdictions (Illinois comes to mind), wearing headphones while driving is a traffic violation. I gave up listening to music while riding years ago, but barring an exception written into the vehicle code stating that the headphone law doesn't apply to bicyclists, then it does apply. Not that I or anyone else in this thread follows every traffic law, but violations of this one are pretty easy for cops to spot.
On my rollers, Black Sabbath, BOC, Led Zeppelin, and lots of newer stuff that comes and goes with the seasons.

i like metric too while i ride. indie/electronic usually isn't my cup o tea, but there's something about metric that i connect with. I just picked up the me first and the gimme gimmes live album, the new psyopus, tony danza tapdance extravaganza, and supercontinent last night. i'm hoping to get very familiar with all of them while in the saddle this week!

I'd play Stooges if I didn't think they'd make me ride into the back of parked cars:

I like Metric a lot. But for riding, I love listening to Ratatat. The Western quality to it gives me a feeling of my rides being just me and my bike ... and the landscape zooming by.

have you heard the between the buried and me version of i want to ride my bicycle (acutally called bicycle race)? it's great. they do rippin versions of blackened by metallica and the day i tried to live by soundgarden. another great bike song is when i get old by the decendents because he asks if he'll still get on his bike and ride around town when he's old.
i'm glad those who've been posting are actually talking about music rather than calling people tarded for enjoying music while riding! i've discovered some new pearls via this thread.

If you haven't heard of Rodrigo Y Gabriela, I saw them last year at Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington and they are amazing. They are just a duo of spectacular mexican guitarists, definitely ride worthy.
Ch ch ch check them out!

Just to chime in on the "Oh, you can't hear things as well, so you will surely die" argument... It is highly recommended to wear earplugs while riding motorcycles, as it elimates the extraneous noises of traffic and wind and only focuses on the noises at hand, like a close vehicle, or sirens, or other noises like that...
So, earbuds that are noise eliminating, kept at a low volume, are actually quite safe to use... At least, that is what has been taught to me... Now, if the music itself causes you to lose focus, that is another thing altogether, but the actual wearing of the earbuds to eliminate noise is actually better than nothing.
As far as music, I'm a fan of Tool, Sigur Ros, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Dethklok, Eluveite... Really, it just depends on the mood.
