help to find single speed in uk
 

Hello,

Although I'm not sure how many Brits use this site I thought I would give this a try. I have recently moved to the UK and sadly had to leave my lovely bikes at home. I miss riding and would like to get a new bike. I want something that I have to put minimum maintenance into so I'm thinking a new single speed would be great for my needs. I haven't owned a fixed style since my wee bike when I was about eight years old so I'm rather unfamiliar with the bike style. I've been poking around the bike stores and had a gander at the specialized langster and charge plug. I'd like to spend around £500 on the bike and I am residing in Edinburgh if that makes any difference. So if anyone is familiar with what is available in the Uk any guidance would be very helpful. Check Edinburgh Bicycle Coop. They probably have their own brand single speed. Just remember that fixies typically are not much/any cheaper than entry level road bikes, so if you want to head to the hills, it might be worth your while to buy a Dawes Sportive or similar. You'll want mudguards!

Thanks for the infor, that list is great. Edinburgh cycle coop does seem to have their own single/fixed bike. I'll check them out thanks. Are fixies really not all that cheaper than geared road bikes, this is part of my thought pattern into getting a single speed. You would think losing all those gears, chainring, cogs, shifters would reduce the cost significantly.

Nope, not cheaper. I think that scale comes into it. Some of the cheaper bikes use a smattering of mtb components to keep costs low, and they are really cheap. Fixies start at about 400 pounds or so, which is roughly the same pricepoint as respectable road bikes.

I'd give some thought to the Edinburgh road bike and the Giant Defy. Dawes, Raleigh, Claud Butler and Genesis usually have some decent entry level bikes that are designed for UK conditions.
