$250 for Sugino 75 Cranks and Zen Chainring (both used)--A Good Deal?

Picked up an Affinity frame and a beautiful wheelset, and now I'm shopping around for the rest. Found someone offering a used pair of Sug 75 cranks and Zen chainring. Snap it up?

no. not cheap enough. Cranks are one thing that I would pay extra to have new. If the square taper interface has been hollowed out at all, you will be SOL. It's also hard to tell if the interface is messed up just by looking it at. if they were 100 bucks, I'd say it's worth the risk, but since they are so expensive I would say just get a new set.

without the bb, the 75s are not that special (esp on the street with sneakers). if you're not getting the set, you can get something just as good without looking corny.

You could get a lower end new crank and BB for cheaper, and have more money to spend on beer/parts/hookers/blow/ect and not noticce any functional changes. Your crank and BB has one of the lower cost/improvement ratios for stuff you can upgrade on your bike.

If it is lightly used I might go for it. Depends on the condition.

I paid just under $300 for mine, including BB, cranks, and chainring. They were the floor model, never installed.

And yes, I think they were worth every dollar. They feel way more stiff than my old Messengers.

I have 75s. They are obsolete and overpriced. Get these. They are stiffer, lighter, and cheaper.

wow, that pricepoint description clearly ignores the sram/bontrager external bearing track cranks.

Sure, better/equal stuff is available ... but 75s are a far cry from ancient technology. Also, 75s aren't that expensive ... just slightly over $200. That's what, $50 more than you'd pay for the price of some Messengers? And the pretty colors.

The NJS stamp pretty much guarantees that they are ancient technology. Sure they will work fine, but anyone willing to pay $250 for a used pair or even a new pair is a real sucker, considering what else is available these days. 75s cost what they do because of fashion, not because they are awesome cranks. If you want to pay for fashion, fine, but at least admit it.

I disagree though, for street riding and polo, I want a good, sturdy crankset (incidentally, I think Keirin frames ... as I stated in the other thread ... make excellent commuter bikes). 75s are basically bomb-proof. Since I started playing polo, bent cranks are very very common and my 75s are essentially unscathed cept for a few scratches in the anodized layer. They are stiffer than any other crankset I own. Granted, I don't have a tricked out road bike or track bike (yet ... to the latter), but even then, if I recall, 75s were *stock* on Concepts just a few years ago.

Also, not all 75s have the NJS stamp on them. JUST SAYIN!

Incidentally, I also think Velocity Deep Vs are some of the nicest rims you can buy for street riding. In all seriousness, they are very very good rims that take damage very well.

I'm just confused on how you think an Keirin frame makes a good commuter?

-Thin tubing that dents easily
- killer toelap
-really steep geometry
-no eyelets for racks or fenders
-no brakers

None of those sound appealing on a commuter to me.

1) A Keirin frame wouldn't dent any more easily than any other bike I own except my Free Spirit conversion. Also, I've never wrecked any of my bikes commuting. Ever. Also, I don't know anyone who has busted up anything but their fork while casually riding unless they got hit by a car. The reason so many Keirin bikes have dents isn't because they are flimsy. It is because they are taking 40 mph impacts.

2) Toe overlap has about zero effect when you're street riding. Who corners *that* sharply when commuting? It's unnecessary. Besides, ALL track bikes have bad toe overlap, and they are fine as commuters. I ride one every day.

3) How is steep geometry worse than slack geometry for commuting? It has basically zero impact on my efficacy getting from home to work.

4) I don't use a rack or a fender. I carry everything in my bag. I guess this would be an issue for some people, or if they wanted groceries, but honestly, it doesn't matter to most people, I would think.

5) I don't ride with brakes anyhow. I know plenty of people who don't ride with brakes. But even then, you can slap a Keirin brake on it. I know several people with them and they work just as fine as a regular brake.

All of these arguments would essentially apply to any other track bike ... so the question becomes, why ride a fixed gear to commute at all? And I can only offer my usual response ... yeah ... I could ride a derailleur to work. But IMO it's more fun to ride a track bike. If you want to go down the path of Keirin bikes being non-functional for this sort of riding, then basically they are only good for track racing in Japan, and I refuse to believe that a used bike is better collecting dust in a warehouse rather than being ridden, even in a place other than it was originally intended to be ridden.

Since people are willing to pay 250+ for Sugino 75s I might sell the ones that came on my TK2 and buy some Omniums.

They don't cost that much ...

Used in Chrome ($140 Buy-it-Now):

https://cgi.ebay.com/Sugino-75-track-...A1%7C294%3A200

New in Blue ($223 Buy-it-Now):

EDIT: The $250 figure, in case you didn't notice, *includes* the chainring.

Thats without BB and you said you paid less than 300 for yours so there's obviously people willing to pay that much for them.

This thread is just full of fail.

I paid ~$290 for cranks *and* chainring *and* BB ... all basically new, as they were floor models. The chainring goes for $90-$100 new (I think the Zens are a little cheaper.) and the BB is about $100 new. Plus the cranks, of course, at about $220. So basically just over $400 worth of stuff.
