Wheelset question

I found this sexy wheelset on craigslist but the guy says cyclocross in the description...what's the difference in wheels, and would I be able to use these on my fixed gear?

well they don't have a cog/lockring interface so, no, they aren't ideal for fixed gear. They have an interface that is used for multi speed sprockets. I think you can buy a converter to convert those types of hubs into FG hubs, but it will cost like 80 bucks. Someone who knows more about this will surely come to the rescue, but for the momeny I am giong to say that wheelset is definitely not ideal for FG use.

the hubs are not track hubs, so no, you cant ride them on your fixed gear. you can ride them single speed, but they are disc brake wheels, so you'd need a frame with disc brake mounts.... so cyclocross is pretty much what they are made for..

Dang, alright. I just want an wheelset like this with Black spokes/black rims.

PedallingATX 05-10-09 01:39 PM

dude that is so easy to find. Go on Ebay and type in "Black Deep V" and you will find tons of options of DP18/Veeps that have black hubs/black spokes/black rims. Those will run you like 175 or maybe even cheaper

AnOxymoron 05-10-09 01:59 PM

Every deep v I run into is priced at like ~300 or more. I want something anodized so I can run a front brake and not have to get that mismatched machined wall.

passerby 05-10-09 04:47 PM

Weinmanns are anodized black and you canget them for 180.

AnOxymoron 05-10-09 05:03 PM

Orly, I didn't know weinmanns were anodized. I guess I'll try and get a pair of those then. Thanks.

time bandit 05-10-09 07:56 PM

false. unless my weinmanns are chipping anodization....

Aries 05-10-09 08:11 PM

I have black/black/black anodized weinmanns and you will eventually wear away the black on the flat surface of the rim if youre running a brake. If you use it long enough it wont look that bad because you'll eventually wear everything off but I used a brake on my weinmanns for about 6 months and it didnt wear uniformly.

AnOxymoron 05-10-09 08:59 PM

Damn, guess i'll really have to save and get some Velocitys.

Aries 05-10-09 11:48 PM

I'm pretty sure you'll run into the same problems even with velocities, if theyre not machined, and you plan to use a front brake. It sounds like youre faced with 3 options, either get a wheelset that has a machined front rim and regular rear (which is available) and run a front brake, or get an anodized/painted wheelset that doesnt have a machined front rim and run a brake - causing it to eventually wear off, or get an anodized/painted wheelset that doesnt have a machined front rim and NOT run a brake. I think option 1 is best.

AnOxymoron 05-10-09 11:51 PM

I just don't like the look of the machined rim, and I want to run a brake because I can't justify constantly buying new tires from skidstopping or whatever they call it "RIPSKITTING" lol.

tFUnK 05-11-09 12:22 AM

yeah, it can work, if you get one of these.

PunctualAlex 05-11-09 12:30 AM

It is possible to get a disc brake front wheel and run two non-machined rims, but you'll also need to get a disc brake fork. Avid makes a BB7 for the road. That setup will run you 2-3 times as much as just a new wheelset, but having color-matching rims is obviously priceless to some folks.

that rear wheel has 130mm spacing.

AnOxymoron 05-11-09 12:42 AM

No thanks, I'll just stick to getting a nice wheelset. The pair I have on there right now is crappy and old.
