Maybe things aren't so terrible
After hearing the bike booting story I was thinking about how it seems local governments don't encourage riding enough and it really made me angry. Not even two minutes later I came across this article:
BREWSTER, Mass. (AP) Parts of a bike path that wends 22 miles through Cape Cod will get a $1.1 million facelift, state environmental officials announced on Saturday.
State Environmental Affairs Secretary Ellen Herzfelder called the Cape Cod Rail Trail ''a major resource for the Cape'' that gets some 400,000 recreational users a year, making it a ''high priority'' for upkeep.
''It's just like your bicycle you've got to keep it in good shape if you want it to be fun and safe,'' Herzfelder said.
She said that the initial $1.1 million will go toward widening and repairing a one-mile stretch in Brewster and a shorter section in Eastham. Gov. Romney has proposed that another $5 million be used to overhaul roughly 20 miles of the path. That must still be approved by the Legislature.
Herzfelder said Romney wants to create a $258 million capital fund to rebuild the state's aging infrastructure of bridges, roads and public buildings. The fund would include $55 million for the state's park system, which makes up 10 percent of all the land in the state, she said.
''We're reaching a critical juncture, and that's also true of the parks,'' she said. ''We have a lot of aging infrastructure.''
Maybe we (Boston riders) can get Mitt to get off his a** and build that bike path in place of what used to be the Central Artery.
