Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Changing a saddle to match a "look" is stupid. It gets soaked in ass sweat, and is there to keep you from ruining your junk, not to look cool. Sheesh.

From: Brooklyn finally.

Bikes: Bianchi San Jose, fixed

And no one is going to see a saddle when you're on it.
Plus all saddles look like penis' from at least one angle.

I have one and I love it. I will say that I agree with you in a sense about comfort. When you're pedalling hard you don't notice it is there and it's design gives you a LOT of room to adjust your position over the pedals depending on the situation. Depending on how I position on the saddle I can be using my quads to a big degree or I might be riding in a position where I hardly feel the strain on my quads at all, which is really nice. Basically you've got a great seated position for spinning, climbing, whatever you need.

As to comfort though, it's not an issue of long hours or long distance but just pedalling exertion. If I ride at a good pace for 3 and a half hours everything still feels very comfortable saddle wise. If I just cruise along at a slow pace with friends it can start to feel a little bit uncomfortable after about 45 minutes to an hour. Nothing really out of hand though and overall I still love this saddle and would recommend it on a bike that's going to be ridden quickly as opposed to just cruising around slowly. This saddle probably wouldn't work great on a bike with riser bars and a more upright position for instance.

And FWIW, I don't think this saddle is any less useful to even professional cyclists than more "modern designed" saddles. There are a number of pro cyclists who still use San Marco vintage saddles despite having sponsors that actually make competing saddles.

How are you supposed to take pictures of your bike for the internet if you're sitting on it? This makes no sense.

^^^ Well cool, because I just picked up a white NOS San Marco Rolls titanium at a swap meet and am going to put it on my early 80's Colnago. It looks like it has a good width and a shape that allows one to move around a bit and choose different positions. I don't like the seats with a lip at the back (i.e. the old Concor saddle) because I find they tend to limit some positions. Especially on FG where you can't stand and coast for a break on longer rides.
