Am I a loser because I don't have a car and prefer riding?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Am I a loser because I don't have a car and prefer riding?

I don't live in a city or a bike friendly community, so a lot of people think I'm weird for riding my bike around for transportation. The main reason is because my car is **** and I don't wanna pay for car insurance because of the financial situation.

What can I say to people when they give me ****?

Two weeks ago, a friend of mine (jokingly, but with a hint of seriousness) told me that "bikes are for people who can't afford cars". Since then, he's been in one accident and had his truck broken into. He's constantly turning down offers to go out because he's broke, or doesn't want to waste the gas.

I recently replied to his original snarky comment asking how being able to afford a car is going for him.

Many people still see not having a car (or not driving a car) as a threat to their self-image. In this guy's case, his masculinity. And he does it at the cost of his health, the environment, and his social life.

I kind of think it's sad.

People here hate bikes and people with them. Obviously this is stupid to all of us, who ride and love our bikes. But put yourself in their mindset for a moment. They really *cannot* fathom using anything but a car for transport.

Anyhow, that should have been fairly obvious and I am not sure why it has to be said.

There are a lot of losers in this world but likely you're not in that category. Keep peddling and let losers be losers while you save money, get healthy exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. More power to you. Glad you called in on the guys in the Blazer and turned them in. That's being a winner.

reminds me of the bill hicks bit where he was reading a book and the waitress in a waffle house asked him 'whatcha readin' fur?!'

"because i don't want to be a ****ing waffle waitress"

If people give you grief for riding your bike you're obviously not pedaling fast enough!
Seriously who cares what anyone says? you're saving money and getting healthier as well as helping the environment by not driving yet another polluting vehicle.

I only ride my bike all the time because I don't have a driver's license temporarily.

You're a loser if you can't afford a car and you're a grown adult and therefore ride a bike instead.

You're not a loser if you CAN afford a car, maybe even have one that you use when you need to, and therefore ride a bike because you WANT to, not because you HAVE to.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing . I get the same thing from everyone I tell I ride a bike and I live in a bike city. Sometimes when I talk to people with my helmet on, I get the "so you ride a motorcycle?" question, but when I tell them, "No a bike cycle, the one you pedal" and they look at me as if I'm a moron or something's wrong with me.

I heard a quote once that really makes a lot of sense and is applicable to this ? you have.
"Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

I don't agree with that at all. The point is either one is a form of transportation and if you can get around why should one say you're successful or not. If you can't afford a car and ride to a bike to get where you need to, so what? There are a lot of people who can't afford a car and still own one.

It's been about 5 years since I moved to Albuquerque from Chicago, and some people I've known and have been associated with for a long time still think it's weird that I don't, or have never, owned a car. They always offer me rides. There is one guy who always asks if I want to throw my bike in his truck. Some people cannot comprehend that it's enjoyable. I guess part of it is that they don't know the thrill of riding through traffic (although there isn't much of that here). In the last few years bikes have exploded here, though, and I'm meeting lots more commuters but I couldn't tell you who does/doesn't own a car. Lately a LOT of people think it's cool or novel that I don't own a car, but I can tell they can't fathom how I do it.

And to iansmash, most people can't afford cars. Our big auto and gas companies have created this very misguided idea in the minds of people that you cannot survive without autos. So then everyone has a car they can't afford and they're in debt for years. Now that they have cars they move farther away from all that they do/need (work, stores etc) which creates traffic. Then everyone is stuck in traffic jams and getting irritated and they come up with this weird idea of space (ever watch someone refuse to let someone pass or pull ahead of them?). No one walks anywhere anymore, so they are getting fat and they start hating themselves, so they get bigger cars to compensate and then they have new loans and spend more on gas and are more in debt. Then they see me flying down the street, free as a bird in flight, in shape and enjoying life, and they call ME a loser. How about that.
