Miche Track Group???

Crankset, Bottom Bracket, Hubset, Headset, Seatpost, Cog, Lockring, Chain and Pedals for $$534.95

crankset, bottom bracket, hubs, headset, cog, 27.2 x 250 seatpost and chain for $449.95

http://www.thebikebiz.com/v/vspfiles...-MICHE01-2.jpg

I recently purchased a frame--need components. Am looking to get new components for a clean build thats all mine to grind into dust--and frankly, I'm over haggling. Did that for the last bike.

Questions:
How are Miche Primato components?
Are how do these deals look?
Any better ideas for good deals on good components en masse?

Those are the old Miche track cranks, although made for riding with a single chainring, they only have 135 BCD, which is not track standard and makes finding nice track chainrings that fit a bit harder (e.g. dura-ace). Also, the cranks use a square-taper bottom bracket. And you're only getting hubs, not wheels, which would be expensive to build up from scratch (you can find pretty good deals on ebay).

I would go:
Cranks - Truvativ Omnium (There were some on eBay for $155 shipped with BB)
Headset - Irrelevant if your frame came with one (did it?)
Seatpost - Branding not super important, you could get a Specialized Pave carbon for about $50
Wheels - Hunt eBay - I just picked up some Open Pros to Surly hubs with Tires, Tubes, 2x Miche Cog Carriers and 3x Miche cogs for $250 shipped
Chain - I like the KMC SL-710, it goes for about $20 at a LBS

Some websites you might want to hunt are:
http://ebikestop.com
http://universalcycles.com
http://aebike.com
And of course, ebay.

With some time, I think you'd be better off in the long run going this route vs. buying the Miche track group. You could also pick up a set of Miche Pistard track wheels for about $300 shipped, which are a deep rim to Miche track hubs. Miche track hubs are nice for the price too.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response idig--I definitely did not know that about the BCD of that crankset. Is it Miche proprietary? Are there other manufacturers that produce quality 135 BCD track chainrings?

Unfortunately no, a headset did not come with the frame.

I know you indicated I should drop the groupo idea, but there is a certain aesthetic appeal (not to mention convenience) in purchasing all parts, at once, from a single company. In any case, what about THIS GROUP?

If I'm not mistaken, this crankset is 144BCD. I hate the black chainring, though--but that could be traded and replaced.

I will definitely spend some time at the sites you suggested.

Thanks!

I have the "older" cranks with the 135 BCD. Miche cranks are really nice, and with the big chain and the 7075 chainring, I wouldn't worry too much about getting the front chainrings worn out. I have bikes that I purchased in 1983 in my collection with a gazillion miles without chainrings worn out. That sounds like a pretty solid deal to me.

The Miche BB is well built, as are the hubs. No frills, but actually designed for track racing.

hegenbarth 05-30-09 02:52 PM

Thanks EB--do you (or anyone) know if there are any practical differences b/t the old and new Miche cranks designs, besides the BCD?

Erzulis Boat 05-30-09 03:01 PM

Actually, I prefer the older chainring, and the machining is top notch, just as good as my Campy Pista stuff. Besides the obvious cosmetics, I don't know the difference of the gruppos.

I am extremely happy with my Miche components.

FTA- I prefer to get the hubs and rims separate, and have my local wheel building master build some bombproof stuff, plus you get to pick the spokes etc.

clink83 05-30-09 03:41 PM

Campy uses 135bcd chainrings for all their noncompact cranks, so finding them isn't that big of a deal if you're willing to run road bike chainrings(which work fine).

brandonspeck 05-30-09 04:33 PM

I love Miche. They're solid track components, and they're made in Italy. They don't break the bank, either.

operator 05-30-09 05:01 PM

The Miche 3 piece bottom bracket is a piece of ****. Replace with the correct iso campy bottombracket which is not 3 piece as soon as possible.

+1 on Miche stuff. The Advanced cranks are good for the money and on par with 75's imo, the hubs are also quality stuff too. The bb can be a little shaky, but it is adjustable. I've never had a Supertype seatpost, but those things are the sexiest looking seatposts out there. I've heard the headsets are crap though...

Those seatposts were designed for the track. Probably one of the most uncomfortable seatposts out there. Throw in any $15 kalloy AL seatpost then try the supertype. You'll notice that it transmits a hell of a lot more road vibration than the cheap piece of **** seatpost.

Besides looks, there's nothing else going for it. On that note, I have a miche supertype seatpost 27.2 black for sale if anyone wants it :)

Ken Cox 05-30-09 05:55 PM

Uncomfortable seatpost?

How does that work?

I have no experience with Miche components, but I have heard them spoken of well on this forum.

This is the frame I'm building up:

http://www.leaderbikestore.com/prod_...ead_lores2.jpgI think the Miche will do quite nicely. I'd love to hear more on the inherent discomfort of the seatpost mentioned above--why is it particularly uncomfortable? I've never heard of a seatpost being to blame for discomfort. It seems like there are somany other things involved that would play a greater part in the transmission of road vibration.

I'm also intrigued by the criticism of the bottom bracket. Any more opinions on that? I've seen Miche cranksets around town a few times, so I imagine there's got to be a lot of people out there with an opinion.

Promo 05-30-09 07:24 PM

ug...that seat post in the second groupo won't look good on that pretty lugged white frame (now my dream frame....a white frame that is) and you'll have second thoughts. i doubt there is discomfort of said seat post. then again its your build...GO FOR IT!

OH please go if your still going for groupo for the set you posted.

hegenbarth 05-30-09 07:31 PM

Ha, well I asked the distributors if they could replace the black post with a silver one and they said sure. That's also one of the reasons I don't love the Miche 144BCD crankset--that black chainring that comes with it is an eyesore.

Next topic: those pedals. Is it suicide to ride those pedals brakeless? For the sake of discussion, lets take it for granted that riding brakeless isn't suicidal in the first place. I have been doing so for a year (riding breakless), but have never even touched clipless pedals, let alone rode in them.

Just curious why you say this? I have had no trouble with the 3 Miche BBs that I recently installed. Did you use blue locktite on the threads?

lwkwafi 05-31-09 12:08 AM

I love the Miche groupset (got it in a group buy for the group buy IRO).
Looks sexy, and couldn't be happier with the whole setup. Great quality on rings and cogs.

Is that the Miche headset?

Wow this is a first, no one is going to jump on the Leader frame? The hater's are slacking today...

To answer your question about riding clipless brakeless, it is fine so long as you replace your cleats when necessary, and crank down the tension.
Although I might recommend getting a SPD type pedal (like Time ATAC's) and a MTB shoe if you will be riding it around town.
Road shoes are uncomfortable to walk in, while MTB shoes are little bit better.

I gladly invite the haters to dis the frame:notamused:. Keep in mind I paid nowhere near the $800 MSRP.

Could you clarify what you mean by "crank down the tension"?

Some clipless pedals will have a tension setting, it basically sets how much force is needed to unclip. :thumb:

Excuse my ignorance--does cranking down the tension mean its harder or easier to unclip? Intuitively, "low tension" sounds like "easier to unclip", but I'm guessing its the other way around, since I would want to be pretty firmly locked in to the pedal if brakeless/clipless.
