My bike (Bianchi Pista) got stolen a couple of years ago. Three months after it was stolen I found it for sale on craigslist.
Luckily I had stuck a business card down the seat tube, and I had also written my name on the rim tape underneath the tires, so when I got the police involved there was no question that the bike was mine.

Yeah i wrote my name and number on the rim tape, but I think I will stick a business card down my seat tube as well. Great idea!

Damn Raleigh and the bike hipsters j/k I'm friends with a lot of the bikers down there, hell ,we probably know some of the same people if you've ever been to the Jackpot
Call the cops and let them know the situation. It's the only way to handle it the right way. In my younger days I would have just cased the joint and grabbed it.

ass u me
wow. You guys are amazing.
You'd feel really bad if some inner-city kid was an aspiring track racer and happened to have a nice bike and then you ran his his house and stole it or you took it from him off the street.
I'm black and when i was younger it would to kill me when people saw my nice sh*t and people would assume first that it was stolen. When i used to bmx in sf cops would harass me assuming that i "stole some kid's bike". Literally detained me until i did a trick on it.
so, f*ck you and your simple thinking.

How many inner-city kids do you know who would buy a Fuji track and leave it leaning up against their house... unlocked?
Plus the combination parts being the exact same as a bike stolen in the same town pretty much ensures that it is stolen.
Good work on the OP for catching it.
Simple logic, not simple thinking.

just got this email: "Moshe got his bike back for 6$!"
so I guess it worked out win/win.

What part of "There is no doubt it is the stolen bike" don't you understand?
I checked craigslist on the possibly false, but still plausible assumption it may of been a stolen bike. When I didn't see anything there, I forgot about it until I learned of a stolen bike matching the description of the bike I saw. EXACTLY.
decals over "track" on toptube
red electric tape instead of standard bar tape
silver/grey nonstock dp18s
small ~49cm size

There should have been an ~18 page thread about retrieving the stolen bike which only ends in an anticlimactic story.
That would have been something.

Yup. The fact that the OP assumed "this bike doesn't belong here" based on the neighborhood. As if those that live in that neighborhood wouldn't have such a bike and therefore it's stolen. Then he went out of your way to try to prove that it was stolen...because people in that neighborhood don't have bikes like that.
EDIT: I addressed croscoe instead of the OP. Sorry, croscoe.

Did the OP ever consider that:
- Those that live in such a neighborhood COULD be interested in track/tarck bikes
- It's cheaper to own a bike than a car. Track bikes aren't just for broke college students.
- Someone could just be visiting and rode the bike to that part of town...just like the OP was passing through.
- Maybe they found the bike (stolen bikes get ditched all the time).
- People leave their bikes outside of houses all the time.
I lived in a less-than-middle-class neighborhood in Baltimore for a while, and it was the safest part of town. Much safer than the yuppie part for sure. Why? Because just because a person is poor doesn't mean that they are a thief. And it seems that people in neighborhoods that struggle actually get to know each other better than those that walk from their house to their car and don't look up to speak to a neighbor much less get to know them.
The funniest part about the bigger picture is that some people will travel to another country and hang out and take pictures of poor people. Eat with them. Help them build houses and sh*t. Then they feel all good about themselves. But, these same people are deathly afraid of poor people 5 miles away in their own home city.

Wow. In your two previous posts, you make assumptions about myself. Nowhere did I post anything that you accused me of. You do not know where my heart is concerning this situation, and while you may think what you will... You're incorrect. Rather than stink up this already smelly thread with my garbage, feel free to PM if you'd like to discuss anything. In the end, I'm happy the owner got his bike back. Thieves are scum... No matter the race or class.

ugh. shaddap with the racism nonsense already. race wasn't an issue in this thread at all until you made it one, carleton. not to mention the fact that your arguments are worthless because the bike really was stolen! so get over it and stop making yourself a victim ffs.
