Chainring Question
Hey all-
So I'm trying to figure out what chainring/crank to put on my fixed gear. I know what brand I'm getting, Sugino Messenger, but I don't know much else. What is the normal amount of teeth for a fixed gear and how does this effect the gear ratio? I checked out the Sheldon Brown website, but it only served to confuse me more. Thanks for all your help. |
I do not know if there is a standard toth count but I around 46 or 48 might be most comon. it splits the middle between 42/52 or 39/53. but I think it is personal choice. for some reason, I guess because it is to be ridden off road my Fantom Uno only has a 38. I am going to put a 42 atleast on it soon.

More teeth -> harder to pedal. The sizes of the chainring and cog determine the gear ratio, and this is used with the diameter of your tires to determine gear inches.
TBH, if you don't understand gear ratios, you have a lot more to worry about than what chainring you're going to buy. |
