Attention NYC folk...
 

My wife and I are gonna be in NYC this Saturday to take my visiting cousin from CA on a shopping trip to Soho. What fix-friendly shops are in the area that I can visit whilst my wife and cousin shop their asses off? I know Bicycle Habitat is on Lafayette...any others? Thanks.

Gotham bikes between west broadway and duane street. They recently put a sweet s-works tarmac on display.

chealsea bikes on 26th and 7th (look it up first, i'm not 100% sure of that address) has several new and used fixies for sale - that's where i bought my fuji and am somewhat partial to that shop.

thanks for the replies everyone...Now if only I could take my bike with me...I would love to ride in NYC...wife thinks otherwise unfortunately. I'll most likely check out Bicycle Habitat, Chelsea Bikes and Gotham. I'm sure my wife would barely notice I was missing once she's in shopping mode!:) Do any of you know if these shops have Surly or Suzue fixed hubs in stock? I'm hoping to pick a rear hub for my Mavic Open rim. Thanks again!

if you have some more time, you might also check out shops like sids bikes on 34th (bt 1st and 2nd, i believe) and conrads cycles, on tudor city pl (follow e41st st east past 3rd ave,up the hill). not as much fixie stuff there, but very knowledgeable shops with nice stuff.

Having lived in both NYC and So Cal, I'd caution you not to spend too much time visiting bike shops in NYC. Sure, swing by Bicycle Habitat if you're in the neighborhood, but because real estate in new york is so expensive, the shops are small, inventories are limited, and prices are generally very high, especially compared to Cali. When I lived there I got all my stuff mail order.

not to mention very crowed on the weekends. especially bicycle habitat...it can be a zoo sometimes. go during the week if possible.

Yup, the reason I wanted to visit the shops there was because I was going to be in the neighbourhood. Mailorder and ebay are my friends, since the shops in my neck of the woods cater mostly to MTBs.

agreed. i think some people come to nyc hoping to find these gigantic, bright stores filled with every frame and part they've ever heard of, where odds are, you will be shocked at how small and dirty a store like bikeworks is.

it's a tiny little shop on the lower east side, crammed with old stuff. they always have some nice used track frames hanging up, but man. you can't fit more than 4 people in that place on a good day.

timmhaan, I'd like to go during the week but work's got that covered. Unless I call in sick one day, and head on into the city and play posenger for the day...hmmm...

brunning, I'm not expecting any type of Bike Wonderstore with mannequins modeling the latest messenger bag with the secret stash pocket, or blonde and blue-eyed greeters at the entrance. I just love to visit bike shops whether they're big or small and maybe pick up a rear fixed hub or whatever part fancies my eyes while I'm there. I really wish I could bring my bike with me. It would make my wife's day of shopping that much more fun for me! Maybe I can convince her before Saturday...

Try toga bikes, the other store of gotham bikes, www.togabikes.com for the address. It's near lincoln center. Their store is pretty big for a bike store. Takes up 1/4th a city block.

Why can't you take your bike with you? I'm assuming you're driving since it's only about a hundred miles. Heck... why not ride there and make a century of it? :)

I'm still contemplating it. Asking the wife that is... Plus I haven't seen my cousin since last Thanskgiving (prior to that I had only seen her once when she was a baby and she's now in her early 20s) as she's from CA and interning at a magazine in NYC so I really should spend some time with her. Riding in the city will just have to wait for a more opportune time.

Ya, it'll be about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive depending if my wife's paying attention to my driving or sleeping :)

both bikeworks and bicycle habitat will be very familiar with the fixed crowd. skip chelsea bicycles; their service leaves much to be desired.

larry and jeff's bicycles (2 stores, upper east side) is a great shop, but i've only ever dealt with them for my road bike...
