Ways to make a fixed gear faster

darksiderising 06-13-09 07:44 PM

Wear tighter jeans and put a whole deck of cards in your rear spokes.

Aside from getting stronger, you need to make your bike lighter.

A lot of fixed gear bikes are not very light. I suggest getting a CF fork and a lighter wheelset.

Also, if you are used to riding with a U-lock or back pack on, try riding w/o all that stuff. It's amazing how much faster I go when I don't have a backpack on...

Joke question right?

if not-ride more and get stronger, aerobars for a more aero position, raise the gearing as high as you can handle.

eat better, lose weight, go faster!

CharneK 06-13-09 08:18 PM

Nitrous Oxide, low-pro slicks, and a cheap after-market spoiler. :thumb:

Really though, cheapest way is to just ride stronger, after that, buy a smaller cog.

or ride your bike down hills only!

kennykaos 06-13-09 08:20 PM

pedal faster, loose weight

Buy carbon fiber everything. Frame, cranks, seatpost, handlebars, chain, grease, bearings, couch, television, car, iPod, foundation, insulation, pants, comb, watch, wallet, stereo, flooring and on and on and on.

Ideally you will reach a point where you can no longer afford to eat, and that's when you'll see some real weight savings in the saddle.

Wear a pair of your sister's jeans, don't wash your shirts for weeks, and grow a mustache.

Hang out exclusively with people that are slower than you?

Is this in response to his question or are you just telling him to get out? Who knows! It works on so many levels!

cccorlew 06-13-09 10:26 PM

add gears

ianjk 06-13-09 11:30 PM

streamline/fairing.

LoRoK 06-13-09 11:35 PM

Bikes aren't fast, dip****. Riders are.

xxguitarist 06-13-09 11:36 PM

you can actually gain a bit of speed by switching from a crappy tire to something like a michelin race tire.

bumperm 06-13-09 11:38 PM

Add a Whizzer motor?

So much anger.

Actually some bikes are faster than others, all things being equal, as new disc wheels can generate lift and forward momentum.

itsIRIEpat 06-14-09 12:13 AM

if your bike is sub 20 pounds you won't really get faster by getting lighter components especially if you are just farting around town on the streets. Beyond that really narrower tires will provide less resistance on the road; should convert power to more speed.

Some pro cyclist one said, "don't buy upgrades, ride upgrades", if you want to go faster.
