Installing Bottom Bracket
 

So I'm installing my IRO bottom bracket, the one that's compatible with the Sugino RD crankset, onto my bike. I realize now that I need a bottom bracket cup to install this, but I don't want to shell out $40 for one of these. Is there anything else I can use to install it? What do you recommend?

Yeah, a BB tool is kind of a necessary tool that was designed for exactly what you're doing.

There's a right tool for the job, so use it, or don't complain once you screw up the threads on your BB or your BB shell in your frame. Is it worth screwing either of those up?

Either buy the right tool (under $20) or take it to your LBS and have them install it. There are some parts you just don't want to half-ass the installation; bottom brackets and headsets are on that list.

True. It does make sense I guess. I'm just cheap when it comes to that stuff and want a free alternative. I guess I'll go ahead and buy one.

Good tools are an investment. They'll last you a lifetime and save you money in the long run. I can't even count how much money I've saved in the last 10 years by owning a truing stand and doing my own wheel work; nevermind how much all my other tools have saved me.

I have the first BB tool I bought still in my tool box and that was in the early 90's. They last and are worth the investment.

I understand completely, but it doesn't always work out that way with cycling.
