Wheel replacement in New York
 

Hi.

I had got some crap caught in my rear wheel on the way to work today and tore out four spokes and maybe killed the rim. Because of that, I'm looking for a good place to get a new rear wheel, either through mail order (if the deal's good enough) or locally here in New York.

I'm looking for the cheapest solid wheel I can find. I can touch up the truing myself in case of cheaper machine built wheels.

Any advice where to find a wheel either online or in a shop in New York, preferably Manhattan?

try Bike Works on Ridge and Rivington. It's one of my favorite shops. Top notch wheelbuilding, good prices on the build and on spokes.

+1 for BikeWorks... I'll bet you get a more reasonably priced wheel there too.

I'm going to get Dylan's back on this one. While i like BikeWorks and they rebuilt my wheels almost three years ago (after the initial touch up truing, these things have been fine until some recent incidents), Continuum is my preferred shop. Very easy to deal with and a lot of stuff hidden away. Open until 8 pm which certainly beats only open until 6 pm.

I'm really curious as to what was the "crap" that killed your rear wheel.

no, i dont work or own stock there. I just like fighting with queerpunk b/c he is so cute in bike shorts. Plus, real talk, continuum never does anyone dirty.

I went to Bike Works today. Their cheapest wheel was $120, which is about twice as much as a basic wheel should be in my book. I was probably spoiled by Pittsburgh shops, though. Their spokes were a buck a piece, though, and the wheel wasn't as bad as I feared, so I just bought some spokes and fixed up the wheel.

veganwar: Embarassingly enough, I let my lock slip into my wheel while adjusting my bag and tore three nipples in half and bent their spokes to hell.

Were the wheels you were looking at "basic" or were they in truth "slightly fancy"?
They generally dont seem to stock crappy parts @ Bikeworks... You get what you pay for after all.

Jakerock: it had a Jalco rim, straight-gauge stainless spokes, and the non-Formula ubiquitous Taiwanese track hub. I'd guess it would be machine-built and touched up by hand, but didn't ask. That's a basic wheel to me. Doesn't mean it's crap, just that it's nothing fancy.

The last similar wheel I bought was a basic fixed wheel with a Formula hub, Sun M13II, and straight-gauge stainless spokes. I paid the incomparable Jerry Kraynick $60 for it in 2007, but he doesn't have any employees other than himself and keeps shop in a building assessed at $30k that he's owned since 1977.

I understand why Bike Works has higher prices; I'd assume they have pretty high rent and need to pay their employees enough to live in NYC. That doesn't change the fact that their prices seem high, at least coming from Pittsburgh.

Ok... maybe I wish that I lived in Pittsburgh...
