Surly puts quality parts on their quality frame.
Bikesdirect puts the lowest quality part available on the lowest quality frame available, and sells it for 60 percent markup from 'wholesale' to 'retail' and tries to convey 'savings.'

Buy the Steamroller, avoid post-bike remorse.

but... the jury's a frameset

also, most bike frames available in the market are from taiwan, including the surly and the motobecane. More likely then not, they could've rolled off the same factory, and i doubt they have specialty "surly approved" tubes waiting just for their frames. Really, what do you want to do with this bike should decide which one to get.

I'm talking about the frameset here, sorry if I wasn't clear.

I want a new commuter. My city is filled with potholes and whatnot, so I think a 32mm tyre would be adequate. Plus, I want fenders. I'm aware that the Steamroller doesn't have braze-ons; I was going to get a pair of PB Speedez Hybrids (full coverage and clip-on).

The Motobecane Jury gets my vote. I'm currently saving my pennies for a chrome one.

Here is our version of a bike like a steamroller
I do not think there is one single part on the bike that is lower grade than a steamroller

Steamroller is a great bike
Kilo WT is a great bike
Jury frame and Steamroller frame are EXACTLY the same quality

{by the way, it makes no sense to say we use low grade parts, when parts can easily be seen on all bikes. Hw can the Shimano, Sram, Ritchey, Mavic, etc on our bike be any different than anyone else's?}

Does the steamroller need a long pull brake like the Jury?

On the WT are the decals under the clear coat or over? I would purchase a Steamroller over the WT just because I can take the decals off easily.

No - WT uses a stainless steel spoke; but not DT
however WT uses R556 brake not R356
and WT uses Sugino crank instead of Andel

Both WT and Steamroller are great bikes - part by part; spec for spec; they are close; but each has its strong points - be it spokes, crank, brakes, chain, etc

Once the WT is in all specs will be up
and I am certain many will agree at $450 for the complete bike that there are few, if any, wide tire fixed gear bikes that comes close in value

is there any way you can prove otherwise? it's just the ****ing frame. Surly's unnamed steel is just as good as the motobecane's unnamed steel. Surly isn't a manufacturer, it's a brand.

Nice. How do you know that btw?

I'm sorry if I seem a little skeptical, but the Steamroller costs twice as much, so it's hard to believe that just because some guy says it.

The WT decals are under clear coat

I do not order bikes with decals unless clear over decals
as a bike ages, if decals are over clear they start to look really bad, or peel, or worse

Of course, we are starting to do bike without decals
and many with few decals {The Stripper, 2010 Moto Track, Track Team, lots of frames, etc}

I know this due to the fact that I know the factory that makes the frames

Cost of bikes has more to due with distribution method than you might think.

Steamerrolle has several extra distribution costs than WT - that is no secret

There are dozens of examples of this in our business; and in many other industries too

Cool. Getting the Jury then. Or perhaps the Kilo WT.

When is the Kilo WT going to be out?

Steamroller is spaced more like the Kilo WT
Jury has massive room in rear tri - not for everyone, but some like it

Since there are lots of different desires in frames, we do TT, Jury, Cross Uno, and soon WT as options

And we will add more frame options as consumers request different stuff

My objective is to bring high grade steel frames as close to $200 as I can {I think many frames at $350 to $450 delivered are out of range for many}

WT is due in middle of August {August thru October is a hot time for SS/FG - so a lot of our new stuff is coming then}
