asking directions in NYC
ive noticed a lot lately that people for some reason trust me to give them directions while im on my bike. people even go out of their way to flag me down to ask directions. does being on a bicycle automatically mean that you know where your going. is it the same in other cities?

Do you ever give people the wrong directions on purpose? I used to tell choadboxes in wicker park how to get to lakeview via a visit to Cabrini O'Greene.

in boston bicycle=student from out of town, so nobody stops any on a bike for directions.

Well... If you make every attempt to look like a bike messenger then people think that it is your job to know where stuff is. ;)

Cyclists usually do know a city pretty well. I know I do. I was a delivery driver in Austin, though, so that might have something to do w/ it. I never get asked directions though. But, I think people assume that cyclists know where they are going b/c of several reasons:
-If you are on a bike, it is likely that you live in that city and are not visiting (especially if it's obviously a nice bike and not some rental cruiser bike) -If you ride a bike everywhere, you probably are familiar with different streets and how to get places -Being on a bike makes you look like you know what you're doing (usually). |
