ya that might be a tad too high. i started out at 75 gi. then i swapped the cogs to achieve 69 gi. it was so easy to skid, almost too easy lol.

Really thinking about picking one of these up. Looking for a used one but they're hard to come by. I'll probably have to go new.

I know that's where I got the idea. I had never seen a low flange formula until I saw these Sputnik pics. Can't find one ANYWHERE online, though. Anyone have a link to wheelset w/ formula low flanges?

When in doubt, consult Sheldon Brown!

Is that the technique you're using? I'm running a lower gear and I'm not very good at skids - which I attribute to being heavier than I should be, and having undersized balls.

they're Origin8 Gary bars which are kind of like On One Midge bars which are kind of like WTB dirt drops...

I like the bars a lot but I wish there was an extra inch on the ends...I installed some Aztec end caps that extend the bar about 3/4" but I think they could probably fall off pretty easily, even though they're glued in...The bars are a fair bit wider than even the widest set of traditional drop bars (quite comfortable if you carry a lot of weight on your back)...On rides over 50km I've noticed some numbness in my pinkies but that happens to me with most handlebars...

The addition of the Gary bars makes the Sputnik seem like a contemporary version of the kind of bikes they raced on the road in the early 20th century...If only I could grow a handlebar moustache...

That's b/c not that many people ride Jamis bikes in general. In Austin, there are a plethora of bike shops, but only 1 Jamis dealer that I know of. I have only seen 3 other Sputniks in the entire city of Austin (and I go to nearly every critical mass, mooonlight ride, etc). The only Jamis bikes that I do see are MTB and cruiser, not so much road and FG. But, I now have 2 Jamis bikes and I love them both. One day I am going to buy an Eclipse, they are sick.
