Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? For those of you that offered differing opinions or points of view while still maintaining some level of respect, I do appreciate it. I was looking at this from the angle of collecting bikes and not the standpoint flipping for profit. Yes, it makes great business sense. If I was able to achieve even 200% or 300% profits with every sale my business does, I would be replying to this thread from a very large yacht en route to some exotic location instead of my house. I rarely sell bikes on CL, and when I do it is usually to get rid of a bike in my stable to make room for a better one. So the bikes I do sell go for very cheap (usually $70-100 for the really nice ones, free for the crappy ones).

For those of you that have to berate me or anyone else on this forum to try and prove a point (for those of you who actually had one), shame on you. I know this is the nameless, shameless internet but just because someone has a difference of opinion or may not be looking at things from the same perspective as you, doesn't mean that you have to try and go for the kill. We are all here for the love of cycling.

tFUnk...read through the thread a little more carefully. You will find that post #18 actually agrees with me in that bikes on CL are largely overpriced (who, consequently, is also from Orange County). So by your own logic the only thing false is your own post, everything else is just opinion.

We quite a range in price and quality here, with most at the lower end. Actually many of the CL ads have no photos or brand name at all. I can't but think that no one will respond to a CL ad that doesn't have photos.
This one for instance: https://rochester.craigslist.org/bik/1247855410.html
unlike most, looks pretty good, but the seller has re-listed it three times, apparently w/o any luck in selling it.
Price too high for the market?

Too tall for the market. A 62cm frame is a tough sell and the extreme ends of sizing (under 50cm and bigger than 60-62cm) are generally not worth as much. The same bike in a 54-58cm would probably sell in a day or two. He is a bit misguided if he thinks some one 5' 10" would fit that bike. I would say 6' would be the minimum and only if they have long legs.

I think I've also had it with selling on CL. I recently posted a bunch of stuff for real cheap, essentially to clean out my garage (cheap as in $5-$10). I was selling risers, BMX pedals, tires, stems, forks, I even sold a SS 26" wheelset for $10.

It's strange how many weirdos come out of the woodwork. I even responded to an ad of somebody wanting a bike part I had laying around... he ended up being a complete ass - as in didn't-take-his-medications-type-of-ass.

I had to get "stay-away" orders on one guy a couple years ago. Had the police involved and everything.

I guess when you deal with the general public you have to expect the worst and hope for the best. There are a lot of loose canons in this world and you never know when you're going to get one. I should've learned my lesson by now... I guess I seem to attract the psychotic CL buyers that they write about in the FAQ section.

Needless to say, a lot of people I've dealt with on CL have been real cool, but I've had my fair share of nut-so's.

My problems with CL are seller that post an asking price, then expect you to get into a bidding war with others and possibly even pay more than asking. No thanks. If I wanted to bid, I'd go on EBay.

Then when it comes to selling, it's amazing the amount of tire-kickers and flakers you get. Record numbers of them.

i agree that a lot (even most) of the stuff on CL are overpriced. but that wasn't even the point. the point is, you started hating on someone who did nothing wrong, and you got told when you tried to bring it to the forums. i do stand corrected, as post #8 is valid.

He recognized that the bike was worth more than it was going to fetch with torn bar tape, dry rotted tires, loose seat cover, etc., bid on it, won it, put some of his sweat and a few dollars into it and is flipping a very reasonable older bike without ruining it or drewing it. What exactly is your beef? That you didn't bid $67?

I would have been more then happy to give what the 1st buyer did for that bike. Then put some new cables, cheap tires and a new chain on it, clean it up and price it at $300. Then when someone offers $250 for it I would accept it and still come out making at least $100. I overprice things I post on craigslist EVERY time. Because no matter how low you price something people will want to offer less then what you posted.

I agree that it doesn't make any difference what the buyer paid. It's what the next buyer is willing to pay that matters. Besides that person put a lot of effort into fixing it up. The ebay pictures show a lot of rust and neglect.

If someone wants to buy a fixed gear, buy a new track bike. There are lots of deals to be had at LBS, especially with left over models. I brought a Fuji a couple years ago for $400. Just the new tires alone are worth $80-$90.
