Bottom Bracket
 

So I have a messed up chainline. I bought a Sugino XD track crank without thinking about the chainline, so now I need a new Bottom Bracket. What are the cheapest options out there for track bottom brackets, I'm assuming I need a 107 mm. Also, I see that you can just get a 107mm spindle for way cheaper, would I be able to just buy the spindle and replace my old one without having to buy a entire new bottom bracket? And how much does a LBS usually charge to remove/install a bottom bracket? I don't have a pin spanner or a lockring tool and the tools alone will cost me more than an entire new bottom bracket. I really need to start thinking things all the way through.

Try a Sugino 103mm track bb from http://www.universalcycles.com. They're cheap...under 40.00 and they can be installed w/o any special tools. I used a straight screwdriver and a rubber mallet to install mine. Very carefully. Grease the threads then screw in the DS first until it stops. Then give it a couple of light taps w/t hammer/screwdriver combo on the teeth. In the direction of 'tightening' the unit. Then grease and screw in the nds until it stops. Then a couple of taps on the teeth...again in the direction of 'tightening' until the whole unit feels solid. Just make sure you clean and grease the frame threads before you install. Then mount your cranks tapping them w/t rubber mallet. Use Loctite-Red on your crank bolt threads...don't worry they'll come back out should the need arise. :p

a local bike shop would be able to fix you up will a bottom bracket for UNDER $40 installed (they have the correct tools)

yeah, just buy a BB tool or have a shop do it for you. Honestly, if you don't know what you're doing, it might be better to have a shop do it for you. On my last bike, I had a Shimano UN54 BB that I got for $20 from JensonUSA and it worked great. It comes in 103. Most shops should carry it and be able to install it for under $40

the worst part abount nash common guy's method is that you're supposed to screw in the nds side first.

anyway. yeah, dont use a screwdriver and mallet either. sealed cartridge bearing BBs install a lot easier than the old cup and cone you have on yours now. you just need a splined bb tool and crescent wrench.

Should I be looking for 103 or 107mm? And would buying a spindle alone work/end up being cheaper? I'll try to take my bike by the lbs this week and see what they say, but from past experience they aren't the most knowledgable in the field of ss/fg.

You need to measure spindle length.

So the lbs wanted to charge $40 for a miche track bb and then another $28 to install it. So... looks like I'll be in the market for a track bb and tools. What tools will I need to do this, I've looked and there seem to be a ton of different types of tools for BB's and I have no idea of knowing which ones I need.

And then a torque wrench for the cranks is a good idea too.
