I am looking outside at the rain, and think i am going to take 4runner instead. ;p

I hate riding my bike in the rain, mostly because people around here...who tend to drive like idiots in good weather...are completely r*tarded in even the slightest drizzle.

Driving while talking on the phone and watching tv is more difficult with the wipers on, I gather.

I love riding in the rain. Nothing better than being so exposed to the elements and yet not. Naw mean?

My post was about 90% sarcasm.

The whole "fenders and rain gear" thing is just like someone calling you out for not riding mountain trails and saying "That's why they make big knobby tires and shock absorbers, girly man!" to justify themselves.

Even though I live at the beach, I don't swim in the ocean in the winter either. I guess I'm just a big "sissy" lacking balls.

By the way - I do own a car, and I like my car.

Lately I have been a fair weather rider. Since I'm born and raised in Texas, the heat doesn't usually bother me, but lately it has been. When it's 105F outside without a cloud in the sky and I'm ALREADY sunburned, I just can't do it.

I still ride everyday, though, I usually just wait until 7:30 p.m. to go out

The heat is suffocating sometimes.

I would also like to add to my post that riding in Texas heat can have a negative impact on your social/professional life. When you show up places drenched in sweat, it's a surefire way to alienate people b/c no one wants to be around someone who smells or is disgustingly sweaty.

8 months out of the year, it's great to ride in TX, but during the summer.....ughhhhhh

Not really, since not everyone has an interest in riding mountain trails. Since you already do ride your bike, it's more a case of folding like a deck of cards whenever things start to get mildly uncomfortable, difficult or dangerous.

It's not as though I go calling people out on this left right and center, but check the thread topic. Is this not a discussion on the relative merits of toughening up and riding when things are less than ideal vs simply taking the air conditioned, climate controlled plushly upholstered way out? Well there you go, and that's my thought on riding in the rain. I believe there are people who would rather live a life that was challenging, a bit dangerous and one with obstacles to overcome rather than a life where you exchange the promise of comfort and safety for the guarantee that you'll die of boredom. I believe that's why a lot of people chose to ride bikes in the first place, not because it's easy but because it is hard.

I only disagree with you because that's what this discussion is covering, I wouldn't call you out otherwise so I don't see what reason there is to take offense. :thumb:


EDIT: Disclosure time: I occasionally take public transit if I'm resting my legs after a week of hard riding, and if I have to travel 100 miles I'm more likely to take some kind of motorized transport than ride it unless I'm just riding for the sake of riding. I simply think it's a worthwhile goal to try and do something more challenging than taking the easy way wherever it is possible. More often than not, I do manage to challenge myself.

I ride my bike for fun only so yes. I did get stuck in a hail storm a few weeks ago and that sucked.

Starting in the rain is hard for some reason.... but any time I do end up riding in the rain.. I ENJOY it.

BTW, no fenders, no rain gear (unless you consider board-shorts and safety glasses rain gear).

I currently commute every day, despite the weather, about 30 miles a day. I love riding in good rain storm. I wish I had a better solution for rain gear. I always get to work just as wet inside from sweat as I would from the rain. I have to say a week of rain can get hard, especially the wind. I travel across fields with deafening head winds.
Why? Because I can. Life is uncomfortable sometimes, but the benefits of some discomforts outweigh the comforts. I really feel like I'm living life after such a ride.
For the record, I also get a kick doing 140 mph on the autobahn. I know I'll live longer if I spend more time riding the bike.

i'm not a fairweather rider, but i am a fairweather fixed rider. even though it's really only because i only have one fixed at the moment and it's all pretty, i always take a ****ty bike out in the rain and snow.

I have to be in the mood really, as I ride for pleasure exclusively. At the moment I don't have any suitable raingear in my closet I probably wouldn't.

There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.

I don't mind riding in the rain when all i'm doing is going out for a ride(doesn't happen often, but short rain rides can be fun).

I don't like commuting in the rain. I have a rear fender, but no front fender, and I hate showing up to work/class with my pants soaking wet. I still do it because my house is too far to walk but not far enough for me to justify driving/paying for parking.
