^ maybe he was a student in 1934 :D

i have clipless shoes that are just as comfortable with cleats on them as any of my other shoes. there are several companies that make them. mine are adidas. look around.

steveymcdubs 07-14-09 02:37 PM

Yeah I know they exist. I'm just very picky about shoes :)

Retem 07-14-09 03:01 PM

picky like girl

I don't give two ****s about NJS. I was exaggerating a bit; double straps and quad cages are ~$60. Show me where I can get them for $15 and I will forever suckle from your swollen teat of knowledge.

single strap and standard cages. theyre cheap and they work and you wont have to drill cleats into your sneakers

steveymcdubs 07-14-09 03:57 PM

It's not like I'm riding without any foot retention right now. I'm using single straps/clips but plan on upgrading to doubles/quads sometime in the near future.

I have this really ugly pair of shimano shoes i use. They have a recessed cleat, but other than the fact they say shimano on them, you'd never know they're cycling shoes, just really ugly.

If you don't want the look of clipless pedals, you could always get these:

Clipless pedals and shoes are lightyears better than clips and straps (double or single), but good cycling shoes are what makes them so effective and comfortable. Double straps are fashionable and all, but not nearly as much of an upgrade when it comes to the performance.

Function over form anytime. I dunno man, I've heard the exact opposite: that switching to doubles = a world of difference.

Retem 07-14-09 06:40 PM

mks single gate clips toshi straps and rx-1 pedals are the best set up I ever had

It goes like this. And I've tried everything.

Single strap: +
Double strap: ++++++++
Cliplessssss: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If I were using clips and straps, i'd be running doubles all day long.

dudezor 07-14-09 07:09 PM

lol@McGuyver clipless. That's some sketchy looking stuff right there.

It's well worth sucking it up and getting some stiff soled MTB shoes imo. My first pair of clipless shoes were a semi-casual, flexy soled shoe (Specialized Taho), and each pair of shoes I've bought since have gotten progressively stiffer. I don't think I'd ever go back to flexy soled clipless shoes.

seajaye 07-14-09 07:40 PM

i went from clips and single straps, to double straps, to clipless. as above people have mentioned, riding clipless is a significant improvement over clips and straps, even if you're running doubles.

if you're spending more time on your bike than off, get some MTB shoes so you can still walk around.

if you're spending more time off your bike than on, i don't see the problem with clips and straps.

who ever designed those should be taken out back and burned....twice
those are bad I think the bible refers to them in a few places.

This thread is ******** to me, i switched back from clipless to clips and straps because i wouldnt ever ride my bike because it was so much of a pain to put on cycling specific shoes.

Whenever i want to ride my bike, i just hop on and go, no special shoes required.

This whole ideas seems a bit dumb if you ask me.

Scratcher33 07-15-09 11:12 AM

walking in those homemade shoes does not look like fun

I used to think this way. Then I realized - either way, I'm still wearing shoes. My cycling shoes are just as easy to put on as my sneakers.

iansmash 07-15-09 01:26 PM

yeah but wearing clipless shoes when you're doing other things than riding sucks...it's like walking around in ski boots or something

the only time I would ride clipless is if I was using my bike for the sake of riding and not transportation

or if i was riding somewhere where a change of clothes was going to happen anyways (aka riding to a job that required me to wear a suit)

vinfix 07-15-09 01:37 PM

If there was ever a perfect fit for the phrase "cobbled together", this would be it!

Clipless pedals have their advantages for "serious" riding (going far, fast, up lots of hills) but for the purpose you describe you don't need them. Unless you want to buy shoes, some people are into that. A single strap and clip is fine. I've logged many miles that way, fixed gear and/or commuting, and back before there were SPD's on a road bike. Now I'll wear SPD's when I put on the bike superhero weenie wear.

robotkiller 07-15-09 01:59 PM

I dunno. I've had some clipless shoes that were pretty casual and comfortable. Definitely not a cheap option, but I have a hard time going back from clipless.

TejanoTrackie 07-15-09 02:01 PM

Now here is something to consider

hairnet 07-15-09 03:18 PM

Not worth it without the stiff soles of clipless shoes. Won't it feel just like riding on the pedals without the cleats?

LoRoK 07-15-09 04:57 PM

Just rock some bad-ass cycling shoes (I have Sidi Dom 6). Maybe people think they're dorky, maybe they don't. All I know is that they make me look like I ride my bike. Which I do. So it's alright with me. And I can tell you that after having these, going back to what I thought were my stiffest soled shoe and regular pedals was so uncomfortable I didn't want to ride more than a couple blocks, even though my Custom Nuevos + Double Toshis are so awesome looking. They just sit around now. I have no problem with how the shoes look, but the pedals suck. I wish I could rock Doms with my old setup.

adriano 07-15-09 05:03 PM

my toshi doubles are gathering dust after trying spdsls.

JTMK 07-15-09 05:20 PM

so... ive never even tried clipless. people seem to like them... can i romp on a skid stop and be sure my foots not going to pop off? I've gone through cages every 3-4 months since i switched to fixed 3 years ago, and think i may go to clipless. i know i most likely sound like an idiot, so feel free to point that out...

Unless you're riding your bike barefoot, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. You still have to put shoes on to ride your bike, and my Sidi bullets are velcro which is way faster and easier to put on than my PF Flyers with laces.
