Long Island, NY FG Riders

I love riding my fixie, even though some of the roads on long island are treacherous and cars have no clue what the law is when it comes to cyclists.

There are a ton of riders in my area, all road bikes.

I was wondering if there is anyone else out there who rides a fixed gear in Suffolk County??

If so, I want to ride and maybe get a group and start some group rides.

Never seen another fixed gear bike in person, not even at a bike shop here! 99% of the workers don't know what it is either! Any good shops? I'm on the border of nassau/suffolk.

I'm in Nassau, but ride in both counties. There are many great places to ride..you just have to know where. In certain areas (particularly the more upscale areas between the North Shore and Route 25 in Nassau and western Suffolk Co), there are a lot of great roads with rolling hills that are ridden by many people and the drivers are used to dealing with cyclists. Of course there's also lots of great riding further out into Suffolk Co.

Besides myself, I think I've seen two other fixies here in the past three years. Both were old dudes riding old conversions that looked like they have been riding fixies for decades. Everybody else rides $X,000 carbon and ti road bikes (on the road) and absurdly overcomplicated full suspension mountain bikes (on dirt trails). I ride a mixture of fixies, road bikes, touring bikes and ss/fg mountain bikes in Nassau and Suffolk.

I don't bother with LBSs (much) around here...they are generally way too expensive.

I use to live up in port jeff and trying to ride a fixed gear was pretty difficult with all the hills. Plus i dont have the $$$ to drop on a ridiculous bike as so many riders do out here.

jpl, west islip is not far let me know when you build the bike.

I'm willing to travel a little bit to meet up for a ride.

Port Jeff has some nasty hills that are honestly more fun riding a roadie. If you are into longer fixie rides, start from Riverhead (or near there) and head out along the North Fork...there are no big hills, just minor undulations, which is perfect fixie riding. There are lots of roadside produce stands along the way for you to feast on strawberries, blueberries, etc and lots of wineries, if you are into that sort of thing. I usually bring my panniers and stock up on local produce on the way back. The towns of Greeport and Orient are fun stops as is the Orient Beach State Park. The round trip is something like 64 easy miles from Riverhead to Riverhead.

I did that ride ride 2 weeks ago on my rode bike with a few friends. roads were great and the terrain would be ideal for fg/ss. I got a cue sheet from S.B.R.A ( suffolk bike riders association) web site.

Hi,
I'm in Babylon also. I would also like to build a kilo stripper as a ss. Are you guys building from a frame and fork? Are you installing your headset yourself? If so, What headset are you using?

this is old! I'm glad there is some interest out there. I actually have a good group, we meet up on Wednesday nights at the West Sayville Firehouse on Montauk highway.

We have been averaging around 20 or so guys and gals, fixed gears, single speeds, mountain, road, cruisers ... all are welcome its a lot of fun.

Its kinda in between the Sayville Station and the Oakdale station. If you take the train to sayville you go south to montauk highway then make a right and its about a mile down the road on the left. We usually meet around 7:45pm. What do you ride?
